Volume 7: "Clash of the Titans"
Final Round!
By Jaffer Batica
Hello Kingdom Hearts Community!
Well, this is it! The moment you’ve all been waiting for: the final round of our "Clash of the Titans" mini-tournament!
As you recall, the decks that have made it into the final round are Deck #9, created by Michael (the Man of Mystery), and Deck #11, created by Sarah of the Doctor No's tournament.
Deck #11 is a powerful aggro deck, based on the hammer blow of waves of Donald Duck-powered Brooms. Deck #9 is the very model of a balanced deck, but bends towards speeding through Worlds quickly by keeping them as free of Dark cards as possible. Two titanic contenders showing off the best (so far) of what we’ve seen from the Kingdom Hearts TCG yet, at least in this office.
It begins...
A hush falls over the crowd...
Both players have chosen Level 3 Riku, so the younger player goes first, this time in control of Deck #11. Four Brooms immediately leap out. Finding no resistance, Deck #11 makes the blow. Deck #9 drops down to 4 HP.
Deck #9 is undaunted and plays Destiny Islands. Jiminy Cricket is drawn using that World’s search ability and uses his ability to put the Moogle on the top of the deck. Deck #9 then follows by casting Bambi, putting the Moogle into play, then Level 3 Hercules and Level 4 Leon. Not a bad comeback!
Biding its time, Deck #11 brings out another Broom, Donald Duck, and Wakka. This is a deck that defies challenges! Still, it waits for the opportune moment and hangs back.
Deck #9 brings out Destiny Islands once more, bringing out another Jiminy Cricket, positioning the deck, and bringing out heavy-hitting Friends like Beast, Jack Skellington, and Level 4 Goofy. Confident challenges issue forth, reducing Deck #11 in HP.
A few more turns pass and things start to look desperate: Deck #9, waiting on Worlds to appear, challenges Deck #11 repeatedly. Deck #9 can muster massive attacks with high support values and Deck #11 can only respond with a Broom at a time so far - there may be lots of them, but they’re certainly not limitless. Still, with Donald Duck in play, Deck #11 manages to put out a few Curas to keep the HP up. Also, since Destiny Islands is the only World in play, challenges stay safer on the Light side.
Finally, Deck #11 plays Level 1 Halloween Town and switches over to the Dark side. Two back-to-back Level 3 Simbas suddenly appear, harmlessly discarding Brooms and Simba on Deck #11’s side, but also discarding Deck #9’s Level 3 Goofy, Level 3 Hercules, Level 3 Beast and Level 3 Peter Pan, leaving Deck #9’s Friend Area horribly empty. A Soul Eater then snakes out and drops Deck #9 by 3 HP.
Deck #9 stands stands at two HP and Deck #11 at four HP. Things are looking bad in this sudden turnaround, but Deck #9 manages to bring out Jiminy Cricket to cast Level 2 Dumbo into play. Once in play, Dumbo allows for Level 3 Jack Skellington, 4 Leon, and Level 4 Goofy (oh, woe that there are no Attack cards left in the deck!). Not wanting to risk a confrontation, Deck #9 hangs back and waits.
Deck #11 then seizes the moment and lashes out with Oblivion! Deck #9 pushes Leon forward, hoping that it can get Deck #11 to use up all of its resources, but Deck #11 then follows with Soul Eater. Now, even with all of Deck #9’s Friends in play for a combined Dark side Attack value of 28, Deck #11 can still throw in six Donald-powered Brooms for a total of Attack value of 31!
Deck #9 drops down by three HP and Deck #11 is declared the winner!
Thunderous applause erupts from the spectating crowd of FFG staff! An impressive win from an impressive deck!
Congratulations Sarah on "cleaning house" with her killer Broom deck and congratulations to everyone who participated in our "Clash of the Titans" tournament. We had a lot of fun with these decks in our little office league and we're really looking forward to the next event so we can see what genius emerges from the minds of our most creative fans.
The next event is coming soon, so stay sharp and keep shuffling!
