Volume 3: Curse of the Heartless Wrap-Up By Special Guest, Jaffer Batica
Hello Kingdom Hearts Community!
Well, it's been a few weeks and the dust has settled from our "Curse of the Heartless" event. Believe me, there had to have been a lot of dust kicked up with a play-style like Curse of the Heartless that encouraged a lot of "aggro" deck-building. A lot of people built their decks around Level 3 Riku as well as Tigger. I'm sure in every tournament players got to see Soul Eaters clashing against Soul Eaters as well as lots of people giggling as they hopped around the table (that +8 support value is nothing to sniff at).

I think CJ from Diversions in Ohio summed up the event best when he wrote "no players more than the battle deck players loved this one. While the light side locations give a bit of a boost to world racer decks, the dark side locations most certainly put a HUGE spring into the step of the battle decks."

With Level 3 Riku swinging his 7 Attack Value, coupled with a Soul Eater, while challenging on a dark location, that's 3 HP that could be lost in one challenge! Unsurprisingly, the majority of the decks we saw had Riku as their player card.
Even so, at least one well-crafted world racer managed to win the tournament at Gator Games in California. Patrick, the tournament winner, wrote, "I laid the deck out with two goals. One, to get to 13 levels of world as fast as possible and the second goal, was to leave me with as few dead cards as possible. That's the reason I used so many attack cards instead of magic cards."
I admit, I've been frustrated in the past when, despite my best efforts to pack a deck with Donalds and Aladdins, I still end up with really powerful magic cards that I just can't play. Fortunately, Sora and Riku can always swing an Attack card. At least until a Sea Neon shows up…
Speaking of Attack cards, lots of people got some use out of the massive A Darkness Awakened Attack cards, Oblivion and Soul Eater. I'll bet there are loads of players who would wish for nothing more than to be able to put two more Oblivions in their deck. I'm sure an equal number of people would prefer it if Soul Eater could be Limit 1.

Oblivion and Soul Eater
Even so, as Ethan, who played in the Comic Carnival South tournament in Indiana said, "I played Oblivion thinking it would be an easy challenge but then his opponent countered with Fairy Harp which completely turned the tables for me." Never underestimate the power of a Fairy Harp. When would you hear that in regular conversation?

At Dr. No's in Georgia, I think a new land speed record for World Racer decks was set. After having drawn from an empty hand up to six at the start of his turn, Keith, the tournament winner, wrote, "I popped Cid to discard and draw 5 fresh cards. Cid drew a Bambi, who drew me another 2 cards, including the L3 Traverse Town for the win! 13 cards in one go; that's nearly 30% of the deck!"
Whoosh! Did you see that deck fly by?

Thanks to Christopher from Collector's Den in New Jersey who sent us pictures from his tournament — we like to see people playing Kingdom Hearts and enjoying themselves! Also, thanks to all the stores that hosted Curse of the Heartless and all of the players that participated. It just wouldn't be any fun without you.
Well, that will just about do it… What? Did someone mention Clash of the Titans? Aren't they remaking that movie? No, wait! It's the next entry in the Keybearer's Journal in which tournament winning decks will be squared off against each other. Stay tuned for updates and get ready to watch the bristles fly…
Until then, keep shuffling!
