What would you look like as a character in Dark Heresy?

Just a fun idea that I haven’t seen on the boards. But what would you look like as a character in Dark Heresy? Career paths are not necessary here.

All characteristics I’ve used are judged on the assumption that 30 is average and nothing deviates far from it. The low end is typically 26 and the high end is typically 35. Although some characteristics can go above or below. Reference table 1-2 on page 23 of the core book.

WS 33 (Years of wrestling and martial arts)
BS 31 (Above average training records)
Str 29
T 34
Ag 31
Int 34
Per 30
WP 37 (Yes...
I’m prior service Air Force. The number one reason I got back into 40k (after about 10 years) was that guys in the barracks were playing. It relieved some of the stigma of “tabletop gamers = dorks”.

It’s rare to find a good gaming group. But there are some out there.
Im wondering if some of you aren't being a bit conservative on your scores?

Im going to try and work out some scores based on what I know I can do and how they compare to the charts in the book.

BS I put mine at least at 50 (I have not yet missed a target up to 500m (rifle), 50m (pistol), with an aimed shot. So +30 for surprised opponent (target or deer I am hunting at the time), + 20 for aim + 50 BS = 100 percent hit rate (with well over 10000 rounds fired down range and a good number of deer in the freezer over the years).

STR and TOU I worked out from table 7-31: carrying, lifting & Pushing. I can olympic lift 100kg (I can deadlift more put went for the harder of the two types of lifting) and carry 45 kg over moderate terrain for 10 hours (the chart doesnt give a specified time so based it the time qualifier from table 7-29: Narrative Movement). So that would give a combined SB and TB of 7, due to accumulated injuries though I would put my TOU in the 20's so that would leave the STR in the 50's. So say 51 STR and 26 TOU.

Looking at table 7-29: Narrative Movement, I can walk for 6km an hour for 10 hours on moderate terrain, so that gives me an AB of 4 so Agility somewhere in the 40's. And on table 7-28 movement (metres/round) I tested that to check and yes I can run 24 metres in 5 seconds, so again an AB of 4.

Anybody else tried to compare what they are able to do with these charts?

Giving you a base BS of only 30. Considering your experience, I'd still put it in the 40s, though.

For the strength, I'd say 40, and TOU 30. Don't count your injuries against your toughness. generally more injuries means a greater tolerance for pain and understanding of whats going on - organ shock usually does more damage than the injury itself.

And, yeah, AG 4 makes sense too. Granted, a lot of your stats are due to your military training, and not everyone has that. Me, I'd be some fat, corpulescent, heavily-augmented tech-priest (I'm a Biomedical Engineer), so I couldn't really just translate my "stats" over. Needless to say, they'd be in the upper 20s, low 30s at best.

Nah, my BS is definately +50 (Marksman score on my last test), give me a red dot and I dont need to take time to aim to hit a statitic (or moderately moving) target, and Ive never shot pistol with anything other than iron sights, nor would I call a glock an accurate weapon :-p .

But I would think most military with a combat mos should have a BS above 40. 30 is human average, 60 is max human potential (top competition level shooting). So I would hope most combat trained soldiers would be above average, otherwise their country doesnt have very good training.

I reckon my TOU has gone down because my body breaks down easier than it used too as a young buck. But my STR is definately in the +50 (My max deadlift is 250kg, my max olympic lift would be better than it is but I dont train it heavy due to various injuries).

Edit: I guess my TOU probably is still in the 30's as everytime I do break myself Im doing something that normal people wouldnt do . When I first looked at table 7-31: carrying, lifting & Pushing I thought that I probably could claim to have a SB + TB of 8, but didnt want anyone to accuse me of power gaming, so went with 7 instead

As the rules of DH give the human genetic potential to be between 20 and 60 I would excpect there to be a bit more spread in abilities in real life, and a few more people with abilities above in the +40's. Perhaps the charts need modified? Or perhaps we change the way Bonuses work. Instead of using the tens place, round to the nearest tens place. So S 46-55 would be SB 5 and so forth. The issue there is damage is shifted up by 1 point 50% of the time for melee combat, and toughness bonus is shifted up by 1 point 50% of the time against all damage.

But thats the biggest flaw in most RPGs, real world movement, leaping and lifting.

Im going to have to look into this some more.

I feel the idea of a SM with a WP in the 30's to be unrealistic. The few SAS soldiers I have had the honour of knowing I would say their WP is in the 50's. You just dont pass SAS selection and training if it isnt. So given how the SMs are supposed to have the hardest/best training and hypnoindoctrination etc, I just cant see them not having a WP in the 50's either.
Hmm... even in the case of the SAS, Mossad, etc. I have a hard time imagining them being even vaguely comparable to a Space Marine. I'm not saying there aren't freaky badasses with oodles of specialized training in the real world (which at best would be comparable to Imperial Guard Stormtrooper, I'd guess). A Space Marine isn't that. A Space Marine is Captain America in a neurally-attached suit of futuristic power armor who basically lives in a state of constant war sometimes for as long as 10,000 years. I am confident in saying that such warriors as Space Marines have not existed on this planet.

If someone on this forum can claim Space Marine level combat skills based on the scale provided in the DH rulebook the stat scale needs serious, serious revision.
So if a 'normal' human can have +50.....what sort of plusses does a Bloodthirster get?

What about an Alpha+ psyker?
As the DH rules work a normal Human can have sats up to 60. 31 is only the average starting stat for a charcter with only 400xp. All my players bought up their primary stats that related to their characters role as quickly as they could, so they had a few stats in the high 40's low 50's (depending on the starting stat), that is in the rules.

For a Bloodthirster? Well for S and T and A, I guess they would have the unnatural trait possibly twice (again this is in the rules), making them stroner and tougher than the PtU Marine (being the only offical SM we have to look at yet).

The thing is with BS if you can hit 100% of the time (with the bonuses listed in the book) you can hit 100% of the time. It doesnt matter if it is a 9 year old girl, a modern day soldier, a 40k SM or a Bloodthirster of Khorn.

As for TT stats crossing over to DH I understand it is not a direct crossover. In that 5 on TT does not neccesarily = 50 in DH. But others here can explain this better than me I think.

I doubt there are even Gyms in this universe, so all that physical prowress is the result of a stressful life.

Also, running numbers like this isn't really how the system was designed. IF on the other hand you can look at 1000s of rounds fired in a lot of different training, hunting and combat situations, then compare your known hit rates to the bonus and penality combinations according to the DH rules and still decide that the statistics would indicate that you and your colleagues have +50 BS, then I think you would probably be right.

Re:What would you look like as a character in Dark Heresy?

I’m not sure if anyone truly has 50+ Ballistic Skill. Shooting at stationary targets on a shooting range is not an accurate representation of battle field conditions.

I’m not sure what a good hit ratio would be under combat conditions. I think the U.S. SWAT, FBI, etc. might have a good idea. I believe they have more realistic training that simulates live action. (Count the number of shots, the number of hostile targets hit, number of civilians hit, under what time limits etc.) But even they aren’t good combat simulations because I don’t think they simulate being shot at in return (But I might be wrong).

Snipers are a completely different story. It’s nothing like the combat conditions that most infantry face. So with accurate weapons, high-powered scopes, spotters, etc. then they have a much higher hit percentage.

The biggest eye-opener for me was actually when I first played paint-ball. I was 14 I think. In a situation where you’re pinned down and taking cover, it’s hard to hit someone who is doing the same. Even coming straight at them and unloading when they’re in the open is hard. I remember a number of times when I couldn’t hit someone that was 20 feet away! (Granted, paint-ball guns aren’t incredibly accurate, but they are accurate enough). There use to be a great in-door place I went to. It was dimly lit, it vented in smoke from pipes, had all kinds of ramps etc. And the place was huge. It was in a warehouse building.

I’ve also known people that are great marksmen. But when you add in all the random factors like return fire, poor visibility, poor communications, multiple targets, etc. then they probably aren’t likely to hit more than 30% of the time.

FYI: I do not claim to be an expert on the subject. I can only speak from my observations.

P.S. There’s nothing wrong with the humorous posts like Graver being a mindless servitor in 40k!

~Administraticon

I think things like ranges would get test difficulty modifiers such as routine (+20) or Easy (+30) in addition to other modifiers after you become adjusted to just things. Add in teh fact that at ranges, and even when hunting, you arent at risk of getting shot back (usually) and arent racing initiative and what not and I think most combat experienced veterans with loads of experience still fall in the 40s BS.

All you need to know is what the game says the stats are for different "types" of characters. If the game says 60 is the max for human and 50 is average for space marine, do you really think you have space marine accuracy?

Your "equation" to convert real life to the game is whats broken.
Awesome stuff AES but I think you made the head a bit to big on this one. "You" almost have the anatomy of a halfling which is sort a shame since the rest of the drawing is great. Unless you actually have the body of a halfling of course . I would shrink the head in Photoshop and fill in the blanks that "stamp" tool. The lines will then look like it is made by pencil and the proportions of the drawing will have better proportions.

I hope you take no offense because that is not my intention.
No offense taken Robban I think you are correct about the proportions on this one. Thanks for the feedback. I am a kinda short person but definitely not hobbit short. I'll see if I can pull out some photoshop voodoo shrink that head down a bit .
From completing the stats unit of my maths course in a week, finishing the morning of the exam, I have concluded, that stats is one of the easiers branches of maths. I would much rather spend my time learning something more difficult, and I will apply to my working life, such as mechanics, or just some pure maths, because that's just silly
