Has anyone made any custom table mats for the game? I am thinking of painting up some trench lines, towns, woods, etc. to give the aerial look.
Any suggestions?

Chris
I'm going to use a Scenics Woodland...or is it Woodland Scenics, ah I never can get that right. Anyways, one idea I'm going to try out is using a Woodland Scenics 50" x 30" pre-flocked (ahem, I said flocked, not the other word....Hey, I just thought of something. What if Ben Stiller's character in "Meet the Fockers" worked for Scenic Woodlands and his job was pre-flocking the vinyl sheets ...ah, forget it, I'm getting off topic here...) Now I forgot where I was...

Anyways, I am going to use one of those Woodland Scenics sheets, put out some trees and little buildings and stuff, and try that using the miniature planes. If the terrain gets in the way, we'll just move it.

As far as something to use with the cards in this game, I suspect the answer to what everyone, myself included, is looking for may very well wind up coming from an unconventional source as far as wargamers are concerned. I mean, it may be that some play mat for little kids to play cars, or dinosaurs, or some such thing may wind up being the perfect thing for this game.

I was thinking that by just using a non-hexed Woodland Scenics pre-flocked terrian roll of the 50" x 30" variety, I could just place some terrain on it helter-skelter like, and then just move them out the way if they conflict with the movement of the airplane minis. We did that for AAM with the terrain within the hexes, and it really made game play a lot more easy.

I think a game mat of some sort would be the ticket here, though. I mean, in aerial combat, the terrain is really just a one dimensional backdrop anyway, unless the fight really does come right down to the deck. I'm going to try also exploring the posibility of finding some kind of childrens "play mat" that may work as well.

It may sound odd, but I think the matt, along with at least one more set of minis will make a pretty big difference toward getting the ball rolling on this game here where I'm at. I like the game, but I'm most definately in this one for the miniatures part of the game. That's what has me hooked in to this one.
I love the pastel style of the art.
The painting was originally made for a boardgame by Grefgory Alegi and me for the Italian Air Force Ministry. When I proposed to re-use it for thye background of the cards, I have been told that it would be totally out of style compared with the neat computer drawings of the airplanes by Auletta. But I am still convinced that, on the opposite, it gives a nice "far above the ground" effect with the landscape that's quiteblurry in the distance...

But are they expensive or what! Just over US$100 for a 6'x4' and by the looks worth every penny as a lifetime investment goes. I know the 4'x4' is more to the required game size and affordable but I think larger would be more versatile for other gaming and of course for larger games. If only I could justify the 12' x 6'............, "Dream on McDuff".

I have a lovely wooden table that has not been used for anything other than WoW for the past few weeks, and while the grain (maple I beleive) is quite nice, it strikes me as a bit of an alien backdrop for my 1/144 minis.

Would love to see this available as a nice rolled poster - that way I can take it over the local framing store and ge them to PLAK-IT for me...

I will take some pictures and try to upload them. [I am a techno-numpty so this may take some doing!!] The negative side is that it feels a bit flimsy for the money. Roger Wilco has already expressed concern over the price. I think I will need to somehow fasten it to a board to give it longevity. In itself that doesn't worry me but it feels a bit excessive given the cost.

Would I recommend it? Probably yes; but only if the cost doesn't take your breath away too much and you have the ability to store or protect it well.

Hi "Mike White", thanks for the pictures and the honesty about the product. I have a couple of questions about the product though as I "was" thinking about getting one myself but the pictures you have supplied have seeded doubts about the product and also the fact that you said your feelings are mixed.

What size did you buy and if it is 4' x 4' is it big enough to play on.

How was the item packed when it was mailed to you. If it was folded did it do any permanent damage to the mat.

OK besides the price issue, do you think the item you got is as good as what you saw on the web site.

I can't see it on the pictures but is the road detail outside the trench area present like on the one on their site.

What do you think the item is made from for example. A linen sheet with a layer of urethane rubber applied and sculpted on it etc.

Is there any or much 3D detail on the sheet. I think they said there were some ruined buildings on it, if so does/ would it affect or enhance gaming with the thought of game stands. And keeping in mind that after market stands are not recessed underneath, would it have an adverse effect on these in play.

How easy is it to play the game on the mat, in that the surface being rubberized do cards stick or no longer slide around easily under the stands so making game play more difficult or does this not become an issue.

Thanks
TD

Table mat?

What a lot of questions!! Here goes:-
I bought 4x4 and it is plenty big enough to play on.
It was sent rolled in a tube so no damage.
Probably not quite as good as I imagined from the website.
There is road detail but quite faint [you can just see the whitish lines on my photos].
The material is a thin sheet of the sort of porous material used to put down under gravel etc in a garden, so quite flimsy. Hence the reason why I have stuck it permanently to a board.
No 3D detail at all. The surface is simple modelling flock glued on. Any detail is painted on or in a diferent coloured flock. It doesn't affect play at all.
Gaming on it is easy and good. The flocked surface is slightly rough so the plastic bases for the planes don't slip about as much as on most surfaces which I find makes pulling the shorter move cards from under the planes easier!

In all ..... do I recommend it? Well it is much more flimsy than I expected. The simple stuck-on-flock construction makes the price feel a little bit of a rip-off and I could certainly have made something similar by flocking a board myself BUT it would have taken me more time than I would want and so in all I don't really regret it. I would say it is worth buying but only if your disposable income is enough that you can spend that sort of money in full knowledge of my perceeived down-sides of the product.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for your answers Mike. Somehow I don't think I will bother buying one now that I know its not as good or durable as it first appeared but will probably make one myself. As far as price goes I think it is too much for what it really is although I am one that believes that when purchasing items like these you look at it as a long term investment in equipment and some times you have to fork out a bit deeper to get the right equipment that you need. You find that you will use it for other periods and scales of gaming in the future, it is a pity though that you felt that you needed to permanently fix it to a board to preserve it as you have just lost the portability aspect of the item.

Regards
TD

Re:Table mat?

Back on the subject of the Terrain Map. I was thinking about how to replicate the Terrain Mat one. I had to make a portable terrain cloth for a demo game I was running at a show here in Melbourne about 10 years ago for a game of Stargrunt. I wanted a back sheet that matched my home made terrain rather than the clubs. The theme was jungle warfare. blah blah blah. Anytway to cut to the chase I had a GeoHex, felt, hexgridded, ocean mat.seeing as I had two decided to risk it and I flipped it over to turn it into a grass mat.

The mat is nearly 6' x 4' its just under as material rolls are slightly shorter than 4' feet.

As I said I flipped it over with the bottom side up, I applied a coat of Wattyl's Speed Clear which is an acrylic varnish over the surface with a cheap sponge paint roller, this acts as a glue. I then applied a liberal amount of Woodland scenics flock powder in various tones and colors. After it dried I rubbed off the excess and reapplied the varnish/glue and the flock powder, this second go ensured a perfect coverage. The result was pretty good although not as perfect as I had wanted, the flock does not shed too much and I now have a permanent take anywhere terrain mat that suits forest or jungle floors. It took up about 3 large bags of flock and a whole can of varnish so it did cost me a bit of money to make, although not as much as what the Terrain Mats cost. I haven't made another as at the time it was a messy and smelly job and the model did smell of varnish for several months later. The other negative is that it has stiffened the felt up a bit but that said it does still fold up, although bulky, with out getting to creased. If I was to make another I wouldn't use felt which is expensive, but I think I'd find a durable none too porous material that will fold or roll easily. Also at the time I couldn't find any, but instead of using the Speed Clear I would search for a suitable, clear, urethane rubberized glue, this would be more flexible and would soak less into the material causing less of the stiffness issue.
Just to add Woodland Scenics is a very fine sponge rubber scatter which comes from the US and I think is really good for gaming projects as it soaks up the glue a bit and is a lot more permanent than say plastic or wood flock. It also comes in muted realistic colors. It is found in most specialist hobby and model railroad shops.

I went ahead and bought a 20x30 inch piece of 1/2" foamcore board and some of that "no-stick" drawer liner in a tan color (the store didn't have any of the adhesive type in stock). I had some contact spray on hand and annealed the drawer liner to the foam board and it works well. It really holds the planes in their correct line as they don't slide around like they did on the table top. I'll probably experiment with spraying a little Vallejo color in earth/grass tones this weeeknd to liven it up.....total cost was $11.50 for a great playing surface.

Sure, I'll be glad to but it'll have to wait until the weekend (as I want to get a little paint on it first). It's just the basic tan of the drawer liner now. Really was an easy project as the drawer liner came in 20" width (by 4 feet) and the foamcore standard size is 20" wide (by 30"), so you just trim one end of the drawer liner roll to match the legth of the foamcore and stick it to the board with any kind of adhesive that won't dissolve the liner (I used Duro spray contact aerosol, which goes for $3-4 but I had it on hand from another project). I want to test the paint on a small strip of the leftover liner to make sure it doesn't dissolve the whole project when I highlight it.

I know someone.

If I didn't I'd have to get them printed at a place like Kinkos, or Staples, or any of your local print shops.

The guy I know is going to print them on something very sturdy that will take years upon years of wear. you can spill drinks on them and they won't get messy.

vinyl.

Well, I didn't forget to get a picture of the finished product with the non-stick drawer liner on foamcore, but can't figure out to put the picture on this board. Basically, my total cost was about $11-12 per 20x30 board (I made two) and I used some contact cement and spray paint that I had on hand. It would be a bit more if you had to add in the cost of paint and cement. They definitely don't look as good as the printed aerial views referred to in the thread, but they are a tad cheaper and the non-stick surface is really nice as the cards and planes don't move around as much.
