I've had the two main Fireborn books for awhile now, I really like the setting (have not had any practice with the system so I can't really comment on that.) I would love to give it a shot but I've never been able to get any of my gaming group interested. Any suggestions? How do you "sell" Fireborn?

Make it out to be that the mythic age is essentially the atypical D&D setting, albeit semi-historical(Semi- being the key...thing). After all, what would happen to all the great wyrms when all the magic disappears?

Fireborn answers that.

Think of it like this;

Post-Apocalyptic D&D.

Instead of our world going to shit and a loose statehood of traders and things rising up, we have a D&D world going to shit, and a civilization based on technology springing up. Instead of irradiated areas, we have tainted areas, and instead of people thinking that the gods built ruins, we have people denying that the gods ever existed.

You cold even bill it as a short term game while you wait for D&D 4E to arrive (if your group plans on picking it up, of course).

I'd recommend making sure that you are happy with the system before running it with a new group, and that would include running a few trial combats by yourself to make sure that you're happy with it. Nothing kills of a game for a new group faster than having to plough through the book every time a new question arises.

If you have any questions about the system or the setting we are always willing to help.

Re:Fireborn
What are your thoughts?
So far, I'm liking it. It definitely seems like something I'd need to play to fully understand.

I haven't read WFRP, so I can't give any comparisons.

I'm not too keen on Weapon Skill and Ballistics Skill being attributes. I think they'd fit better as Skills, but frankly, this's a game based on a setting made for a Wargame; I'm not exactly shocked that your ability to shoot shit is considered so intrinsic as to be an attribute.

I don't particularly like the way that skills are handled. I'd rather skills gave you a bonus, rather then remove a detriment. But I'm also never too keen on systems that penalize you for not having a skill; it'd seem to me that the biggest penalty for lacking a skill should either be your inability to use the skill at all("Sorry, Bob, I'm afraid you can't build a particle beam using 17th Century technology unless you take the "22nd Century Physics and Construction" skill"), or just not having any ranks in it.

I think the attribute advancement is fairly keen, where you can buy up to 4 +5% for each. It'd make it so that there's no chance, for instance, that someone who started with a low score could beat the person with the highest, regardless of how much training they do.

I like Tech-Priests. Enough said. :P

My biggest problem is that I think the lack of additional games will be a key focus on being an Acolyte; it's quite literally not possible, going by the Dark Heresy book alone, to run a game that doesn't have you working for the Inquisitors. Obviously, this can be house-ruled, but I think that the other two books would've opened up many more options(Especially Rogue Trader). I just would've wanted a bit more openness, but I imagine that the books were intended to have an increasing power level(Acolytes -> Rogue Traders -> Imperial Marines), with Rogue Trader being the most open of the three.

I would've liked it if Dark Heresy had a been less wargame and throwback, and a bit more smoothness to it. From what I hear, the wargame attributes are almost transferable whole-sale to the game, which bothers me slightly. Makes me wish they would've been more worried about making a decent RPG(Which they did, no doubt about it) then making it as much like the Wargame as possible.

My only real complaint about the setting, which I didn't have a whole bunch of exposure to beforehand(Minus reading Wikipedia and playing Dawn of War), is that it can be way too dark sometimes. It honestly comes across as something you could play in a humorous light, ala Paranoia, without the joke failing once. Like a grittier Futurama.

Thankfully, the Dark Heresy book proper doesn't have a whole lot of that super-grimness. There's no mention, for instance, of Penal Colonies being the destination of people who return library books late, or Psykers monitoring entire cities at once for Thought-Crime, or entire Imperial Guard platoons being slaughtered for encountering Chaos. As presented in the book, I could suspend my belief long enough to play without wondering why the Imperium is worth saving.
There is up roar over the closing of Black Industries but hell I got into the hobby to stretch my imagination not to have it all handed to me on a plate.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting the other books. While you can certainly do a lot with Dark Heresy to replace the other two books, no fan material is ever gonna place the official books for some people.

In addition, while the three books will greatly fill out Dark Heresy, I'd hardly call them all that I need. I'd love, for one, to have a book on Xenos. Sure, Acolytes don't fuck with Xenos, but with the lack of the two books most likely to involve rules for them makes it seem like something they'd want to put out, especially for a game based on a setting which is, for lack of a better term, embroiled in eternal war between species. Are Acolytes expected to never run across Xeno-Cults? Or clues for an infestation of Orks? Or anything but Heresy and Chaos-Worship?

To me, it's a bit like putting out a Call of Cthulhu game and making it out to be primarily about the investigation of the Outer Gods' cults, but leaving out all information, except mentions, of the Great Old Ones and their cults and hybrids.

Bonus pointsfor anyone who can tell me about the extension packs (and yes, I know thee is a Descent forum, but I don't want to go there, and I know that at least some of you guys have the game).
Descent is IMO the best dungeon crawling board game.

It does this on focusing on the supporting the RPG elements through board game mechanics. many of these kinds of games are often confused about what they should be, and require certain RPG vagaries in order to work, normally the "GM" not playing as an opponent but to help the other players as a RPG GM would. This is a flaw. A board game should be clear in how it plays.

So if you want an RPG I can recommend many better than Descent. But if you want a board game of RPG style dungeon crawling then you can't do better IMO.

RtL is the most significant expansion to be released and applies this approach to RPG style campaign play. Again, the whole RPG campaign style is governed by board game mechanics, meaning that there is no prep required and both sides can play as hard as they want to win. Again, this is something very cool and unique in the market today.

Yay!
ok thx skywalker.

If anyone played through the entire "fire within"-adventure, how did you proceed afterwards?
The advantage of starting with The Fire Within is that it gets the brood together and explains enough about the background that everyone develops a feel for the setting. There are also a few potential story hooks to build on (faeries, waterfall spirits, etc).

I find it's best to let obvious story points lie still for a session or two after they are introduced, so I went with a story where a friend of one PC, a student, had gone missing and he asked the brood to help find him. This led them to a Brotherhood of Cerenos (sp?) kidnap ring, and from there to an underground fighting tournament in London, which the brood infiltrated. There they encountered... (TBC)

Along the way the character who had dealt with the waterfall spirit kept seeing glimpses of her in bodies of water from rivers to puddles giving vague warnings...

As the game went on, I made every effort to draw them into the world, by using as many real-world locations as possible - investigating a break-in in a real occult shop, a fight with artefact-seeking Brothers of Cernunnos in the British Museum, recuperating from their wounds in a real hospital A&E department, regularly meeting at the Starbucks on Leicester Square, and so forth. When the group encountered Joseph Pennington, I drew on my players' experiences, as two of them had been to The World's End a few times, and had photos of the place from the last time they went...

For a GM, Fireborn is one of those settings with limitless and easily available resources - with the modern age, you can draw from the real world easily and seamlessly, adapting it when necessary to fit the quirks of the Strange Times. With the Mythic Age, its as easy as researching a bit of suitably mythology and rearranging it to make it distinct and different ("this is the myth you all know; but the story has changed over the centuries..."). The modern age also has the added advantage that everyone knows what modern life looks, sounds, feels, smells and tastes like, which removes some of the burden of description from the GM.

Honestly?

I think shitty marketing led to an absolute lack of profits.

First, Fireborn had little to no marketing of any sort. I found out about it on an RPG.net topic, and I've been following it since. I can't recall ever hearing anything about it from an ad or third-party source that wasn't someone commenting on it on a board or whatnot.

Second, I heavily doubt they even broke even on it, cost-wise. I don't have any books or whatnot to verify that, but I've found, often, in the RPG industry, people and companies will continue a line for a little bit, if the initial releases at least break even. The idea being that they've already made their cost back, they can try to make a profit on supplements and such.

Fireborn got The Players' Handbook, a Gamemasters' Guide, and an adventure. After that, they kept touting a Book of Aspects, but eventually dropped it when they announced the hiatus of all games.

My best educated guess is that either they were committed to Fireborn and it didn't even break even, which is often considered a bad sign of a lines' viability, or they expected a blockbuster, and Fireborn fell short. It's similar to how I suspect that WoTC canceled the Alternity line once they acquired TSR due to the fact it didn't sell as well as D&D, even though it could've easily been the flagship product of a smaller company.

Frankly, I suspect the former. FFG is way, way too small to be able to turn down a potentially profitable gameline, even if they expected it to be a storm in the RPG industry.

The Bottom Line: Likely didn't break even due to lack of marketing.

I doubt either Warhammer game is gonna have that problem, unless FFG continually delays products.

WFRP has a built-in long-term fanbase already, and Dark Heresy sold out of its' initial print run very, very shortly.

I doubt either game would've been bought up by anyone unless they were profitable. Hell, Games Workshop might not have even bothered offering them if they felt they were dead lines.

All FFG is gonna have to do is actually put out products for it, and it should be alright. That's the biggest hurdle to it, really; if they can actually get stuff out the door in a timely manner, there probably won't be an issue.

W00T! Would it allow you to ignore the Ready move that is normally used between a Defence and an Attack? I'd like to think not because otherwise... OUCH! But I thought I'd ask first.

Secondly, though I tend to prefer the look fo the Advanced Dragon Creation over the Mirrored one, if I use Mirrored and chose Sensei as my Human Background I encounter a small problem. Yet Release and Restraint cannot both exist on the same character at once. Mwahahaaaa...aahhh...hhaaa... um...), I want to check that I understand payoff sequences.

Let's take Knife Fighter as an example, and the Scythe Sequence in particular. And let's also say that I'm using a Short Sword (being a light blade that the style allows). Now, if I pull of this sequence in full, do I:

a. Work out the sequence as normal and then add the Payoff. In this case I get 8 damage for the sword, +10 more for 2 Powers, +45 for the payoff, for an obscene 63 damage!?

b. Simply add the +45 payoff to the base weapon damage of 8 for a less obscene but still very impressive 53 damage?

I just wasn't sure if the Sequence played out as normal, plus the Payoff, or if the sequence merely resulted in the payoff replacing the normal effect, if you get my meaning?

Thanks for your time.
Firstly, the Fluid Fighter Edge allows you to ignore the Ready requirements of various sized weapons. Would it allow you to ignore the Ready move that is normally used between a Defence and an Attack? I'd like to think not because otherwise... OUCH! But I thought I'd ask first.
You are correct. The ready move between the defense and the attack exists independant of the ready move required by certain large weapons. It represents the character shifting from a defensive to an offensive posture and applies regardless of the fluid fighter edge.
Secondly, though I tend to prefer the look fo the Advanced Dragon Creation over the Mirrored one, if I use Mirrored and chose Sensei as my Human Background I encounter a small problem. Off the top of my head, I'd say you should pick a different but thematically appropriate edge in the case of sensei. I have no idea about the highest aspect issue yet but I'll get back to you if no one else beats me to it.
a. Work out the sequence as normal and then add the Payoff. I'll dig around when I get home and see what I can find.
Thanks for your time.
No problem. I'm a little rusty (time was I could answer the above off the top of my head) but I've been around on this forum since before the DMG was released so I've seen most questions asked and answered and I'm sure it'll all come back to me.

Beisdes, some of the other veterans will be along shortly and they can help too.

Since I'm running it for my groups (both PBP and a very unregular face-2-face group). I'd like to know...
IMO the investigation parts following the attack on the rooftop cafe up to confronting Lycurgin are a little weak (as is the investigative options for Ophois, though this one is a little better).

The PCs will be dealing with the shock of being dragons and may not even decide to investigate the matter. Add in the difficulty of removing Lycurgin from the first attacj scene if the PCs decide to give chase, and the weakness of the investigation which is essentially just one clue known by one passerby, I have decided to drop it.

Instead, I plan to have the rooftop attack evolve seamlessly into the chase sequence after Lycurgin and go directly into his confrontation.

Following that, I plan to meld the idea of Emblae with the scenario Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Souls, where the Fae contact the PCs and offer to provide them with the way to find Ophois in exchange for righting a past wrong.

Being Fae, the way granted to the PCs is actually attracting the Rusalkin from Betrayer to plague the PCs' dreams. However, the Rusalkin is an entity that knows the history of the Ophois. To get this the PCs will play through Betrayer and confront the Rusalkin. It also provides a nice scenario in which the PCs can finally come together as a brood before the big climax of Fire Within.

The story can then continue as written with the PCs travelling to find Ophois up by the Asylum.

Re:Fireborn

Hi Everyone!

For me the world must be "believable". With that I mean, when you play a game: fantasy, horror, SF, action or historical, the creatures and events must be plausible for the players and the DM. Even though the world is totally superficial you have to be able to ”believe” in the world. If you can't imagine your player in the world then you'll get problems to role-play your character. That is also true for the DM. If the DM can't make the world ”believable” then the whole concept of role-play become difficult.

The world of Fireborn is partly based of the known world, some part of legends and history and a big part fantasy. Thats a really good start for a ”believable” universe!

So how mush should we DM:s change the real world? I think we should change the world very slowly and with a ”bigger picture” part lying in the horizon. If we use a creature or character we need to know his part of the rest of the world or at least let the players think we know.

I've had the first session with my RPG-group last week. We played Saturday and Sunday and started with ”The Tower of Babble” and continued with ”Lock, stock, and Three smoking Souls”.

I like the Tower of Babble since it makes it possible to “create” a group of all the individuals.

In ”Lock, stock, and Three smoking Souls” I've made a crucial change when I took away the “insider” for I need the player to get a chance to become a brood before they start to be paranoid.

I'll probably use the Cernnunnos guys in the end since they can become such “pain in the ass” villains.

When they creteded their scions I asked them some questions which I used to create their dragons. I made their dragon characters without telling them they had such a character.
(If someone whants to create a new brood without telling the players that they have dragon characters I can give my “jung/freudian” question paper to that DM..)

None of my players have read anything in the book. I've helped them create their scions with printed parts from the players book. In Saturday they realized that they have some connection with each others. I pointed out that they remembered that the “stealthy guy” always have gone scouting out the terrain. The “biker/ thug” guy always took care of troublemakers. The ex-Spetznaz scary ex-military always secured the base. The “ass-kicking” Firm-member lass was the the last to leave a fight and the older collector took care of the group when it is no fighting. The brood have just started to be a brood. They can “talk” with their minds! They also remember/ dream of things that seems to have happen a long time ago. The educated collector can't figure out which time Era though.

In some of the first flashbacks I let them see their “dragon selves”. Again I pushed that they “know” each others but it was a long time ago.

One of my player have a scion who are a “Firm member – wannabe”. She (Vicky McGee) is 18 years old and have a “ally 4” who are a true atlantean (Guardian). She doesn't know his background except that he is her “uncle” and owns a local pub where Chelsea-fans meets, drinks and warms up before a footballgame. She also lives on the second floor in the pub. She fights hard and dirty!
Her dragon is coal black: a Beast, Dire Dragon and Explorer Outlook with the Undying Serpent Legacy. Her sire is Chimera

The collector ( Wu Tzi Lau) (he is a fence who deals with stolen, jewelery, art and ornaments). He is an 32 years old man with Chinese heritage. His background is Parapsychologist and likes strange thing and events. He have a young guy who helps him. He dabbles in magic, science and occult.
His dragon is yellow (golden): a Drake, Many-Headed and Sage Outlook with the Karma Thief Legacy. His sire is Ladon.

The Stealthy young helper (Ryoka Hitoshi) to the Chinese collector is a Japanese boy who are around 18 years old. His background is “Cat-burglar” and he lives for excitements to see what is in the next room. He get his jobs/ missions from the Wu Tzi Lau. He and the Wu Tzi Lau started with group mind with each others.
His dragon is yellow (lemon): A Drake, Spirit Dragon and Observer Outlook with the Ghost Walker Leagcy. His sire is Ladon.

The Biker (Conrad McGregor) (is a thug with a bike) have just arrived to London from Glasgow. He have started to work for a MC-mechanic a few blocks from HA:s chapter house in London. HA have started to contact him and wants his services. He is a really tough guy he isn't afraid to throw the first punch if it seems to become a fight. Good fights and willing lasses is what he wants and lives for. He also have a crutch with his all the time. The crutch is a Loyal Hammer who have followed him though the ages and re-incarnations.
His dragon is white: A Drake, Ice Dragon and Warrior Outlook with the Frost Wyrm Legacy. His sire is Jormungand.

The ex-Spetznaz (Grigorij Bulatov) came to London a few months ago from Russia. He didn't like what he had to to for the russian maffia (TAK) so left. They have found him! He tries very hard to become another man who doesn't hurt innocent people but the maffia got a firm grip on him (for now). He lives and works in a Greek-Orthodox church in London.
His Dragon is white: A Drake, Ice Dragon and Guardian Outlook with the Frost Wyrm Legacy. His sire is Ouroboros.

Urwendor
