Has anyone made any custom table mats for the game? I am thinking of painting up some trench lines, towns, woods, etc. to give the aerial look.
Any suggestions?

I'm going to use a Scenics Woodland...or is it Woodland Scenics, ah I never can get that right. Anyways, one idea I'm going to try out is using a Woodland Scenics 50" x 30" pre-flocked (ahem, I said flocked, not the other word....Hey, I just thought of something. What if Ben Stiller's character in "Meet the Fockers" worked for Scenic Woodlands and his job was pre-flocking the vinyl sheets ...ah, forget it, I'm getting off topic here...) Now I forgot where I was...

Anyways, I am going to use one of those Woodland Scenics sheets, put out some trees and little buildings and stuff, and try that using the miniature planes. If the terrain gets in the way, we'll just move it.

As far as something to use with the cards in this game, I suspect the answer to what everyone, myself included, is looking for may very well wind up coming from an unconventional source as far as wargamers are concerned. I mean, it may be that some play mat for little kids to play cars, or dinosaurs, or some such thing may wind up being the perfect thing for this game.

Young, Rodger W., Private, 148th Infantry, 37th Infantry Division (the Ohio Buckeyes); born Tiffin, Ohio, 28 April 1918; died 31 July 1943, on the island of New Georgia, Solomons, South Pacific, while singlehandedly attacking and destroying an enemy machine-gun pillbox. His platoon had been pinned down by intense fire from this pillbox; Private Young was wounded in the first burst. He crawled toward the pillbox, was wounded a second time but continued to advance, firing his rifle as he did so. He closed on the pillbox, attacked and destroyed it with hand grenades, but in so doing he was wounded a third time and killed.
His bold and gallant action in the face of overwhelming odds enabled his teammates to escape without loss; he was awarded posthumously the Medal of Honor.

I want to use 3-D terrain, But I don't know how well it is going to work with the planes in case it blocks where I am trying to move a plane.

Any thoughts

I've made modular terrain, originally for AAM, as you already know. I was thinking that by just using a non-hexed Woodland Scenics pre-flocked terrian roll of the 50" x 30" variety, I could just place some terrain on it helter-skelter like, and then just move them out the way if they conflict with the movement of the airplane minis. We did that for AAM with the terrain within the hexes, and it really made game play a lot more easy.

I think a game mat of some sort would be the ticket here, though. I mean, in aerial combat, the terrain is really just a one dimensional backdrop anyway, unless the fight really does come right down to the deck. I'm going to try also exploring the posibility of finding some kind of childrens "play mat" that may work as well.

This is similar to what I was thinking but adding roads, towns and trenches minus the grids.

To borrow a phrase...

"Yeah, That's The Ticket!"

I recall seeing on the net somewhere a while back a 3D terrain setting covered with a few layers of glass to move planes on in different altitudes , a few points of the terrain poked up through lower levels

A Wings of War mat with Dario Calì's artwork (the landscape you see as a background on the airplane and maneuvre cards) is planned for this year.

It will look like this:

Hey now, that is some really outstanding news! Good move on the part of FFG and the folks calling the shots on this game. Any idea on the size of this mat?

Something like 3' x 4' on the British market, 90 cm x 120 cm in continental Europe!

I do line up all the dice near the stove occasionally and make them watch whilst i melt the latest worst offender in an utility pot.

I get good rolls for about an month after that... then well they forget...

not that cards seem to be nicer to me lately...

really I lose more games due to poor luck at dice than poor planning or good opponets.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...you're going about that totally wrong.

When playing, the main thing is to sacrifice some beers (by drinking them, of course ) to the dice gods. I sacrifice about 4/5 every time...

It either works, or I really don't sweat the bad rolls at that point!

thats nice, for me thats sacrifical stout, good stuff....

back on topic I am hopeing that maybe the maps will line up nicely or at least not too badly if I place them next to each other... I get that they are art unto themselfs and so dont expect geomorphic propertys...

Even with out the zeppelin (will be playing that either tomorrow or friday) we have tended to need an big play area for the number of planes we tend to use... thou sometimes it turns into several diffrent more or less unrelated engagements...(but then the winners of those tend to converge and its on again...)

Will the mat be available seperately from the WoW Miniatures deluxe set? It looks like the deluxe set will include stuff that most players will already have.

As far as I know, it will be just the mat with nothing else attached. But Nexus' marketing is still working on that...

Thanks, I guess I was misinterpreting the pix on boardgamegeek.com. Are the maps being designed so that multiples can be lined up to make larger play areas?

Oh, don't get me started on the rum business...

It looks like if FFG is going to do a game mat, then the whole business of making our own is mute. The one they have in the sneak peaks looks like the right way to go to me.

Good news indeed.

This game is so good, it just needs the little things like a mat, the next few sets of minis, and lots of stock, and it will become more than popular, it will be legendary.

I think the releases and the ongoing stock issues seem to be the big problems.

But I still love this game! So does every person who plays it with me.

"On the morning of the 27 October 1918, this officer observed an enemy two-seater over the Foret de Mormal. He attacked this machine and after a short burst it broke up in the air. At the same time a Fokker biplane attacked him, and he was wounded in the right thigh, but managed, despite this, to shoot down the enemy aeroplane in flames. He then found himself in the middle of a large formation of Fokkers who attacked him from all directions, and was again severely wounded in the left thigh, but succeeded in driving down two of the enemy in a spin. He lost consciousness after that, and his machine fell out of control. On recovery, he found himself being again attacked heavily by a large formation, and singling out one machine he deliberately charged and drove it down in flames. During this fight his left elbow was shattered and he again fainted, and on regaining consciousness he found himself still being attacked, but notwithstanding that he was now severely wounded in both legs and his left arm shattered, he dived on the nearest machine and shot it down in flames. Being greatly exhausted, he dived out of the fight to regain our lines, but was met by another formation, which attacked and endeavored to cut him off, but after a hard fight he succeeded in breaking up this formation and reached our lines, where he crashed on landing. This combat, in which Major Barker destroyed four enemy machines (three of them in flames), brought his total successes to fifty enemy machines destroyed, and is a notable example of the exceptional bravery and disregard of danger which this very gallant officer has always displayed throughout his distinguished career." Where is this "Sneak Peeks" you speak of?
