My experience is limited. I read False Gods and Chapter War in the original English and Inquisitor: Order Xenos in Russian translation.

The first two were entertaining in a literary fast-food kind of way -- if I weren't enamoured with the 40K universe, though, there is no way I would have read all the way through to the end in the case of either book.

Inquisitor: Order Xenos, on the other hand, was awesome (despite the fact that Eisenhorn is too proficient at everything to be plausible). I fear, however, that this may be because of a really good translator rather than Abnett's own writing style.

I found the English version to be extremely well-written, in terms of pacing and grammar.

Personally I think it could have done without the arena scene, which to my mind was a bit hackneyed and unbelievable, but yeah it was a great book.

No real arguments there.

My favorite was from Malleus, the parade scene that broke out into a disaster.

I DID like the fact that Eisenhorn 'freed' Glaw to defeat Cherubael and then 'freed' Cherubael to defeat Glaw...thus creating his own enemies, so to speak.

As a quasi related aside I think it interesting that Ian Watson's Space Marine is selling for around 200+ US $ on many sites I've seen it on. That seems rather hefty for OOP genre fiction.

In what vessels did they pour forth their polluted essences, in what form did they hope to subjugate the universe, with whose hands do they, even now, reach across the frontiers of space in vain aspirations of conquest? It is both obviously and painfully clear that it is WE who they venerate; they wish nothing more than to be like us, to be like Him whose children they envy…

Also, what does everyone think of the various short stories?

Any favorites?

I really liked Ian Watson's short story featuring Grimm the Squat, the Inquisitor, the Ogryn and the Grox stampede...though I can't remember the name.

Also, the short story with the cetaur guys on the high-grav world was excellent!

That's from Warped Stars. The story I really liked best from the Deathwing Anthology was Lacrymata by Storm Constantine I also really enjoyed Seed of Doubt by Neil McIntosh. All of the stories in there are good I think save for the ones be ole Billy King who I cannot stand. I think Deathwing overall was much better than its Fantasy counterpart Red Thirst.

Oh yeah, loved the Deathwing short story, and have enjoyed the majority of the Space Marine short stories. I feel that Space Marines lend themselves better to short stories than novels due to their focused and brutal nature.

Sorry, I know we already hashed this out a bit, but I just discovered the polling feature and wanted to put it to a vote...

Not read ravenor yet, but Eisenhorn is ok, nothing more, just ok.

Eisenhorn is simply capable of everything, there is nothing outside his powers or capabilities and so all his problems are of his own creation.

And having read Abnett a lot, its also very, very obvious where the plot is going.

As for Watsons Inquisitor wars, the first book Inquisitor, is utterly superb, and still, in my opinion, sets the definition for what the inquisition is.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious."

Dead even in the poles thus far...

...as I've already said, I'm a huge fan of Eisenhorn and pretty much loved everything about his works.

I DID think Ian Watson's Inquisitor was great, but taken as a whole, didn't care much for the Inquisition Wars...

I DO think that Warped Stars had an even greater impact on my personal interpretations of the Emperor and his plan for Humanity.

Yeah, Abnett is by far the best 40K writer!

Inquisition Wars are far from available in my country... but yesterday I ordered Eisenhorn Omnibus and whole Ravenor serie as soon as I heard that there will be THIRD Abnett´s (I can´t say anything bad on him, with exception of details Ghosts were realy enjoyable) serie about Inquisition:

Eisenhorn vs. Ravenor from look of her hench(wo?)man Elisabhet Bequin...

just few questions, I know Eisenhorn mostly from Inquisitor: Battle for the Emperor´s Soul and i´d like to ask which of his associates presented also there takes part in novels about him (or Ravenor)

I know Cherubael is there (of course) but what about:
# Lucius 'Slick' Devlan (gunfighter-desperado)
# Severina and Sevora Devout (Death-Cultists)
# Delphan Gruss (magos of AM, not excactly henchman, mere oponent)
# Sgt. Black (cadian shocktrooper, pariah)
# Quovandius (mutant)

I can't really say much about Abnett myself. The only thing of his I ever tried to read was the first Gaunt's Ghosts novel and I got so bored I stopped reading about 1/3 of the way in. (Which is rare for me, I usually finish books) So maybe his other works are all every bit as great as his fans say, I just have yet to be motivated to try them after that lackluster first impression.

Just Cherubael, although he DOES have a full compliment of retinue...just none of them featured in the Inquisitor book...

Thanks, I hope some of them appear in Eisenhorn kontra Ravenor, Eisenhorn is pictured in the rulebook after the trilogy, so maybe... (I´d like to see Severina and Sevora, description of haemovoric deathcultists should be great inspiration for Dark heresy Gm)
