War of the Ring: Collector's Edition | Published 22 October 2009

All about the hills the hosts of Mordor raged.
The Captains of the West were foundering in a gathering sea.
The sun gleamed red, and under the wings of the Nazgûl
the shadows of death fell dark upon the earth.

Since its first publication in 2004, War of the Ring has been hailed by Lord of the Rings enthusiasts and hobby gamers alike as standing among the most engaging recreations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world-renowned fantasy epic. Now, you have a rare opportunity to claim a piece of this beloved saga for yourself; Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of War of the Ring: Collector’s Edition!

Pre-order now! Only four hundred of these gorgeous limited-edition sets will be available from Fantasy Flight Games before Christmas, with another four hundred being released shortly after. That’s it, and once they’re gone, they aren’t coming back! In Europe, Italian distributor Nexus Games is handling distribution. Customers outside of the USA, Canada, and Italy may order from either FFG or Nexus, whichever is more convenient, but be aware that international orders may take longer to ship.

These individually numbered copies (only 2000 will be released worldwide) of War of the Ring: Collector’s Edition come in an expertly crafted wooden box fashioned to look like an ancient elven tome. Inside, velvet-lined compartments house an 80-page faux-leather bound instruction book, an enlarged and updated game board (featuring new art by John Howe as well as stunning elvish calligraphy), and nearly 250 hand-painted miniatures, including a special Gollum figure previously only available through promotions, and a never-before-seen Nazgul figure! War of the Ring: Collector's Edition includes rules and figures from the Battles of the Third Age expansion, making your immersion into Middle-earth complete. To learn even more about this amazing collector’s item, head over to our Description Page.

Retailers: The special nature of this product prevents us from being able to provide it to you as we normally would. Retailers still wishing to carry it should contact our sales department.

For more than half a century, Tolkien’s fiction has delighted and enraptured readers. A testament to the beauty and timelessness of his work, War of the Ring: Collector’s Edition is sure to become the centerpiece of any hobby gamer’s, or Tolkien lover’s, collection. Head to our webstore and pre-order your copy!

War of the Ring is a board game that puts 2-4 players in command of either the armies of the Free Peoples or the dark host of the Shadow. By mustering troops and deploying them in key regions, both sides hope to claim power and control the fate of Middle-earth.

Re: darkkami

1. This is a much bigger upgrade than just painted figures. For me the original was unplayable. I know many people love it, but I have a low tolerance for having to work too hard too figure out the game state. This edition fixes everything for me.

2. Have you not considered the cost of production of the boards, box, figures, labor, etc? What about the costs of shipping? I bet FFG makes less than $40 a copy. The designer/publisher at Essen said it would have cost about $1000 if they had gone through the normal distribution chain.

3. The fact that they sold out 400 copies in 24 hours means they could probably sell more, and for a higher cost.

It's quite unfortunate that the game boards for the expansion games (gondor/rohan) are not included, but then I guess the rules, cards and game pieces for those games aren't either.

Anyway, I'm certainly not part of the target audience for this product. And I already upgraded my version of the game. :)

darkkami, I think you (and other people who ask whats the point of this) is missing another factor. Besides this being a collectors piece, with obviously some nicer components, a lot of people who have the base game, or want it, would love to have their figures painted. And a lot of people just don't have time to sit down and paint 200+ figures. I look at it this way, I can go bill 3-4 hours of work and pay for this. Can I paint all the figures in the game in that same amount of time to any real quality standard....

Damn! Thats one of the coolest looking collectors item what i have ever seen. Sadly i dont have any chance to afford it. Shame. Cause this really is a true collectors item. Expensive as hell and only couple of hundred are made But its absolutely stunning.

If i would have the money, i would buy that in a blink of an eye. But enjoy it, all of you people how are richer than me :D

The point of a limited edition should be quite obvious. This gorgeous, one-of-a-kind, expensive one is no exception. I can see why people don't get it, which probably just mean this product isn't for them.

I really wish I could afford such a purchase. It is quite beautiful. At $200 it'd already have been stiff (but understandable with the box being made of wood and all), I'd have been all over it. $400 is not a price I can justify to myself for such an item. Not unless the models have more than decent paintjobs (which doesn't appear to be the case), or the number is much more limited (2000 is hardly limited at all, I'm sure there'll be some left for xmas 2010).

And especially not after the shape in which I, and many others, received the latest collector's edition from FFG (Rogue Trader)...

pushing the bounds of $$ for a game... but with only 2000 total...  if they all sell out quick, FFG will be wondering if they could have gone higher...
