Last week, BoardGameGeek.com announced the winners of its 2011 Golden Geek awards, an annual celebration of the year’s best board and card games based on member votes. Presented every year at BGG.Con in Dallas, Texas, the Golden Geeks present the top releases in fourteen categories based on genre.
We at Fantasy Flight Games deeply appreciate BGG’s recognition of two of our products: Mansions of Madness (Best Thematic Game) and Twilight Imperium: Shards of the Throne (best expansion). We would also like to thank our fans for their continued support!
Best Thematic Game: Mansions of Madness
A relatively new category, Best Thematic Game has had only one other winner: 2010’s War of the Ring Collector’s Edition. We’re proud that Mansions of Madness, the category’s 2011 winner, has joined such distinguished company.
Designed by Corey Konieczka, Mansions of Madness is a scenario-driven board game of occult horror and mystery for two to five players. In it, one player takes on the role of the keeper, a malevolent force working to complete a sinister plot, and all other players take on the roles of investigators, the unlikely heroes who gather to oppose him.
During each game, investigator players explore an eerie location in the hopes of solving a mystery before it’s too late. Investigators win or lose as a team, and need to keep their wits about them to find the artifacts, weapons, and clues needed to stop the keeper’s diabolical plot. The keeper’s goal is to fulfill an evil scheme, which can range from driving the investigators insane to bringing about the end of the world. The keeper’s weapons are fear, paranoia... and terrifying monsters. Can a handful of brave investigators uncover the truth in time, or will the wicked plans of the keeper come to fruition?
Best Expansion: Shards of the Throne
The Best Expansion category rewards titles that bring fresh new experiences to popular existing games. Joining past winners Dominion: Prosperity and Pandemic: On the Brink, Twilight Imperium: Shards of the Throne builds on the epic gameplay experience of galactic conquest by adding new races, new systems, new ways to engage in political intrigue, and much more.
With 40 new plastic pieces, 16 new System Tiles, 3 new races, and new rules for Mercenaries, Flagships, Mechanized Units, and Representatives, Shards of the Throne makes the universe infinitely more dangerous, and the glory of conquering it even greater than before.
Once again, we’d like to extend our sincere thanks to BoardGameGeek, their admins, and their users for these generous awards.
Congratulations to all involved at FFG! I must say that Shards of the Throne is one of the best expansions I've ever played, let alone this year. Being a player of Twilight since early second edition, this expansion has done great things for the game...my friends and I are playing it much more now as we've had a lot of fun with the new expansions additions.
Congrats! A definite reminder that I've gotta pick up both games at some point...well, Shards of the Throne when I've actually got my own copy of TI, of course!
A most appropriate award for MoM. Congrats to Corey, Christian, and the design team for producing such a marvelous game.
Congratulations. Completely agree about Mansions. I love the theme and the game gets Lovecraft absolutely spot on.
Congratulations! Mansions is one of my favorite games.
Mansions of Madness absolutely deserves this award. Plus, it's cool to say that you're playing an award winning game when you sit down for a gaming session. Fantastic work Fantasy Flight!!!
