Deep Ones Rising 10
A preview of Miskatonic Horror, an upcoming Arkham Horror expansion
Arkham Horror | Published 07 June 2011

In the winter of 1930-31, however, the dreams began. They were very sparse and insidious at first, but increased in frequency and vividness as the weeks went by. Great watery spaces opened out before me, and I seemed to wander through titanic sunken porticos and labyrinths of weedy cyclopean walls with grotesque fishes as my companions. Then the other shapes began to appear, filling me with nameless horror the moment I awoke. But during the dreams they did not horrify me at all - I was one of them; wearing their unhuman trappings, treading their aqueous ways, and praying monstrously at their sea-bottom temples.

Miskatonic Horror’s release draws ever nearer, promising to enhance your Arkham Horror experience with its library of new components. Will your investigators be up to the task?

Previously, we examined the new Lurker-related components available in Miskatonic Horror. Today, we will visit the Marsh family’s prosperous little village and see what new content the Ancient Ones have for Innsmouth Horror.

Strangers aren’t welcome

Off the shore of the small fishing village of Innsmouth lies a secret so terrible it is rotting the town from within. The Deep Ones are rising, and while the investigators are fighting to save the inhabitants from their horrific advance, one among them could be a descendent...capable of transforming into the abominable at any moment.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Innsmouth Horror, this expansion introduces several new game concepts to the Arkham Horror base game, including many that focus on your investigator. Will you be focusing on his unique background through Personal Stories, or discovering a previously unknown and terrifying heritage?

Look into the mirror

Innsmouth Horror introduces players to the Innsmouth Look deck. These villainous cards have your investigators playing Russian Roulette...with a Lovecraftian spin. Whenever you are instructed, you must draw one or more of these cards; should you draw the card that indicates your investigator has the Innsmouth Look, then he discovers he is a descendent of the Deep Ones. He is instantly devoured, “transformed,” and a Deep One takes his place on the board.

Oftentimes in Innsmouth Horror the Innsmouth Look deck provides no more than a sense of dread, the idea that your investigator could have the Innsmouth Look is a trick of the mind.

Miskatonic Horror increases your sense of dread with new cards that expand this deck, cards that force Investigators to weigh their options, fulfill dramatic conditions, and draw again...and again.

Location, location

Miskatonic Horror also provides players with more sanity-bending entertainment through new Innsmouth Location cards. These new location cards introduce various new conditions for players to experience during the encounter phase while in Innsmouth.

Further, many of Miskatonic Horror’s new location cards for Innsmouth Horror, Dunwich Horror, and Kingsport Horror are marked with a second expansion symbol that indicates these cards are only used when playing both expansions. This new feature increases the likelihood that multiple components come into play and ensures that these expansions complement each other.

Prepare to suffer through madness and horror as your investigators battle the dark forces anew when Miskatonic Horror is released early in the third quarter of 2011!

Arkham Horror is a board game of mystery and madness set in Arkham in the 1920's. 1-8 players cooperate to investigate the strange happenings about the town, and race to prevent ancient evil from surfacing.

I really like the new Innsmouth Look card(s?).  Not as crazy about the revealed location cards, (I never get excited over location cards), but I do like how thematic the text on them seems (judging by those three).

There is a typo on the first card - "Innsmouth Jail".

Reads 'the important thing is that is notes make it to the newspaper'

Should be 'the important thing is that his notes make it to the newspaper'.

Hope the rest have been proof-read!

Can't wait for this expansion.  Ditto Revised CotDP.

Expect that'll be it for 2011, but a new big board in 2012 would be very welcome.

An expansion expanding other expansions...it's simply great. I'd love so much something like this for Descent! By the way' I'm going to buy this expansion as soon as it's out somewhere in Europe!

I don't think those location cards are that brutal. The fail on Gilman's bad, but it's a +1 check, both other encounters on that card are pos, on the other two cards, only esoteric,  Yha and the cell are neg. so, 5/9 of those encoutners are even neg, and only one brutally so, and it's not like we haven't seen that same encounter from the cell before.  just $.02

Now, that Innsmouth Look card, on the other hand, that's pretty brutal (me like)

Word from FFG says it should ship before the end of June! About the same time as Dark Pharoah.

Were people doubting that there would be mixed Location cards like this? Really?

Oh man, though, these are fairly brutal.
