Hello and Welcome Back, Loyal A Game of Thrones Fans!
This week we are doing something special. Instead of spoiling a new card from the Secrets of Oldtown cycle, we have decided to take a break and instead announce a contest.
This contest is open to all players of A Game of Thrones LCG, worldwide, so read on for details.
The Chosen Few
Now that Dreadfort Betrayal has hit the streets, the Brotherhood Without Banners cycle has officially concluded. To celebrate the close of this cycle and the dawn of a new cycle, we are holding a deckbuilding competition.
The rules are simple:
Build a tournament legal A Game of Thrones LCG deck: it must have at least 60 cards in the House deck, exactly 7 cards in the plot deck, and no banned cards. You may use an Agenda.
Beyond the standard deckbuilding requirements, the card pool from which you must build your deck is restricted to:
* The Core Set
* Kings of the Sea
* Princes of the Sun
* Cards from any of the Chapter Packs from a single expansion cycle: A Clash of Arms, A Time For Ravens, King's Landing, Defenders of the North, or Brotherhood Without Banners.*
Once You Have Built Your Deck
Once you have constructed your deck to your satisfaction, type up the list of its contents, along with any comments or strategy notes you might have on it, and email it to email@example.com before April 1st, 2011.
Be sure to include your Name, Contact Information, and your Chosen Chapter Pack cycle, along with your decklist.
Eight staff members of Fantasy Flight Games, rabid A Game of Thrones players all, will choose from among the submissions one deck from each House, plus two Neutral House card decks. Of the submissions we receive, we will be looking for the 8 most interesting decks, not necessarily the best on paper.** Surprise us! Show us the range and diversity of the A Game of Thrones metagame by showing off your wicked and unexpected combos, your three-turn power rush powerhouses, your high-claim board clearers!
Once the Eight are chosen, we will host a "proxy" tournament at the Fantasy Flight Games Event Center on Sunday, April 17th, 2011, wherein FFG staffers, playing on behalf of each of the eight decks' creators, will battle it out in a three-round Swiss tournament, cutting to Single Elimination with the Top Four. This tournament will be part of a larger event which we will announce more details for in a future update.
These FFG staffers will be playing for the honor of the creators of the 8 chosen decks:
Jaffer Batica, Event Coordinator
Andrew Baussan, Marketing Graphic Designer
Nate French, Senior Game Designer
Michael Hurley, VP of Product Development
Jay Little, Managing Senior Designer
Lukas Litzsinger, Associate LCG Designer
Damon Stone, Associate LCG Designer
Robb Kouba, Young Wolf
All of the creators of the eight decks chosen for the competition will have their deck lists and design notes, plus commentary by the FFG staffer that chose it, posted in a future front page feature on our website.
The Top Four players will receive a set of six Days of Ice and Fire House cards.
The winner and finalist will also receive custom deck boxes from Days of Ice and Fire.
Finally, the winner will receive one free copy of the Gates of the Citadel Chapter Pack and a full-length, front page feature on their deck, design goals, and strategy.
Celebrate with us the conclusion of one Chapter Pack cycle and the dawn of a new Oldtown-themed era, with this A Game of Thrones proxy tournament!
To discuss this contest further, head on over to the A Game of Thrones forums.
* For more detailed deckbuilding rules and the banned list, you can refer to our tournament rules and FAQ. You may use up to three copies of each card in your House deck, so if you have multiple copies of the Core Set or deluxe expansions, you may feel free to use multiple copies of cards from those sets. Decks that contain cards from more than one Chapter Pack expansion will be automatically disqualified.
** You may submit multiple decklists to the contest, however, only one deck per person will be eligible to compete in the tournament.
Based on George R.R. Martin's bestselling fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire, A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, playable by 2-4 players, brings the beloved heroes, villains, locations, and events of the world of Westeros to life through innovative game mechanics and the highly strategic game play. The Living Card Game format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Chapter Pack expansions to the core game.
Hello Chosen Few Participants and Spectators!
Our Staff Proxies drew straws today to determine who will be playing which House, and these are the results:
Jaffer Batica: Targaryen
Andrew Baussan: Neutral
Nate French: Stark
Michael Hurley: Baratheon
Jay Little: Greyjoy
Lukas Litzsinger: Neutral
Damon Stone: Lannister
Robb Kouba: Martell
We will announce the Chosen Few on April 7th and the winner after we hold our Hand of the King tournament on April 17th.
For those of you who haven't submitted your decks yet, hurry! You still have a few hours left!
Good luck to all participants and thanks to everyone for playing.
I absolutely love this contest. I'm not a very good deckbuilder when it comes to the FFG games, so seeing the entries and understanding how 'good' players build decks is going to be very instructional.
Please do this for ALL of your LCG games!
@ jmccarthy: Great question about the House card. The answer is: your House card should not dictate which expansion series is being used for your deck, so the Neutral House can be used alongside any 1 Chapter Pack expansion. Therefore, you may build a Neutral Wildlings deck, although the Neutral House card would be the only card you could use from Brotherhood Without Banners.
Regarding Agendas: If you use an agenda, your House deck is restricted to cards from the expansion cycle that the agenda came from, e.g. if you use "The Free Folk", you are restricted to using only cards from the Core Set, KotSea, PotS, and Defenders of the North.
Since Lords of Winter and Kings of the Storm are not included in this contest, you may not build your deck with the Agendas from these sets: Siege of Winterfell, Treaty with the North, or Knights of the Realm.
Thanks for all the great questions. Keep the decks coming in!
@ Saturnine: is your House card considered to be part of the "cards" in your deck? The restrictions, as posted, seem to apply to your 60 cards, plot, and agenda...
*I meant "As FATMOUSE said", of course. Sorry.
@jmcarthy: As JJ said, if you want to use an agenda, you have to pick the corresponding CP cycle. There's no other way to interpret the deckbuilding restrictions they give in this article.
And a neutral house card deck could still be something else than a Brotherhood deck. But not Wildlings, obviously.
So.. any thoughts on whether we can use the neutral House without having to pick the Brotherhood chapter pack series? If not, both neutral decks are going to end up being Brotherhood...
Thanks for the clarification! (I'm not familiar with "tourney-speak"...)
If you use an Agenda, you must be using its expansion. We can't use the Agendas from the Stark or Baratheon expansions since those sets are not allowed.
Design the decks for joust. "Single Elimination with the Top Four" implies that they will be playing Joust and not Melee.
So we have to assume that the Agenda we use limits us to that expansion cycle? And if Storm and Winter are not allowed, we don't get to build with those Agendas?
Did anyone catch the alternate art for "The Rangers" agenda that was posted earlier. Spooooky.
I'm really excited about this. Also, it provides you with a lot of incentive to make a "different" deck, so as to distinguish yourself from the pack of Stark Wildlings.
OK - noob/rookie question: Are we talking about "melee" format? Sounds like it, but I wanted to make sure.
