Conflicted loyalties in Exodus, an upcoming expansion for Battlestar Galactica

With the Cylons hounding the humans at every turn, repressed ambitions and personal demons are pitting the people aboard Battlestar Galactica against one another. Hidden loyalties and active suspicions may tear, at any time, the entire ship apart.
Continuing in our series of previews for Exodus, the upcoming expansion for Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, today we'll explore one of the three new options introduced. Previously, we looked at how the Cylon Fleet option cranked up the tension with a constantly pursuing gang of Cylon ships hot on Galactica’s heels. Today we’ll look at the Conflicted Loyalties option and how it creates even more deception and uncertainty around the table.
One of the central elements of Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is the Loyalty Card. Not knowing which one of your friends is the enemy creates an exciting atmosphere of suspicion, and in Exodus, this sense of confusion and mistrust is increased. With the Conflicted Loyalties option, players can choose to include the Final Five Loyalty Cards or the Personal Goal Loyalty Cards... or both. These two new types of Loyalty cards are designed to generate doubt and create suspicion.
Before moving on, a bit of context is required. The Exodus Expansion introduces a new process for building the Loyalty Deck, replacing that part of setup from the core rules. Likewise, there is an altered process for handling the wrongful execution of humans (the initial steps of which can be seen in the preceding link). In summary, the Loyalty Deck is now slightly larger than before, and remains accessible near the board even after the Sleeper Phase. This means that if a player needs to draw a new Loyalty card for any reason, a deck exists that can generate mistrust all over again.
Getting back to our preview, the Final Five Loyalty Cards (like the one below, left) have negative effects that are triggered if the card is revealed to any other player. These negative effects can include activating Cylon ships, damaging Galactica, or even executing the player examining the card. What's more, they're all “You Are Not A Cylon” cards, so players that have them will be humans that are encouraging their comrades to not examine their card, or else the negative effect will be triggered (hindering their team). At the same time, an unrevealed Cylon player might use the same argument in a lie concocted to cover his own tracks. Who will you trust?
The Personal Goal Loyalty Cards (like the one above, right) are also “You Are Not A Cylon” cards, but they have certain tasks on them that must be fulfilled. These personal goals will almost certainly arouse suspicion among your companions, as they are generally detrimental objectives such as discarding skill cards or getting sent to the Brig. However, if the player can accomplish his task, he may reveal his Personal Goal Loyalty Card, discard it, and draw a new Loyalty Card. If the game ends before a Personal Goal Loyalty Card can be resolved, Galactica will lose the resource printed on that card.
With all these uncertainties plaguing the Galactica’s crew, there will surely be dire need of adaptable individuals. Cally Tyrol is one such individual. Impulsive she may be, but she has the resources and the dedication needed to pull through in a clutch. Also, her ability to immediately execute someone on the spot can be awfully tempting when the accusations start flying.

Based on the hit Syfy series, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is an exciting game of mistrust, intrigue, and the struggle for survival in which three to six take the roles of their favorite characters from the show. Each playable character has their own abilities and weaknesses, and all must work together in order for humanity to have any hope of survival. However, one or more players in every game is secretly a Cylon, and wants the humans to perish.
She was Cally Henderson for more episodes than she was Cally Tyrol. I imagine players will use her in the Kobol settings and other games.
This is going to be FANTASTIC! The aspect of not knowing who is your real friend or enemy makes this game a personal favorite of mine. By mixing it up with more cards we add an even more unknown aspect - and a penalty for viewing loyalty cards! Also, sometimes the game is predictable with the "I know there are X amount of Cylons left". With this option, you don't know! Definately my next expansion to pick up. As soon as it becomes available, look me up at Fantasy Flight Games Event Center on one of my games nights to try it out!
It should have some kind of regard for complete your personal goal, like a free skill card.
Answering the above:
"2) Why is newly taken Boomer BEFORE sleeper phase forced to take additional loyalty card? Should not it be Baltar BEFORE and Boomer AFTER sleeper phase?"
I doesn't say the new Boomer, it says if the player executed was Boomer, then their new character starts with an extra loyalty card (to balance the deck back from the extra card added for her at creation)
For the cylon leaders, you would just build for the number of human players and replace the sympathizer with a You Are Not a Cylon card.
Looks sweet, just two issues:
1) How does the Cylon leader mix into this loyalty deck creation?
2) Why is newly taken Boomer BEFORE sleeper phase forced to take additional loyalty card? Should not it be Baltar BEFORE and Boomer AFTER sleeper phase?
I'm thinking this is going in a good direction. I can't wait to see how it plays.
Yeah in theory you can play a 3 player game with no Cylon. 7 cards (1 Cylon, 6 Not Cyclon). Assuming you got all 6 "You are Not a Cylon" cards from the original game (i.e. no game text like Final Five or Personal Goal cards) there is a small possibility the Cylon card doesn't get drawn.
Word from distributors is mid-December, so out by X-mas.
Kennon, the next time there is a Thrones event we are both attending, we have got to play this game together.
Cally, talk about a skill set! I like her more than I like Chief.
Early executions mean no more guarantees of the player's human loyalty, and I like that. What intrigues me is that there will now be games where the can be 1 less cylon, including 3 and 4 player games! How will this change the game's dynamic? It makes sense with the new Conflicted Loyalty cards, but imagine in a game using the original cards.
OMG. I need more Battlestar. I'm very excited about this.
