With Whispers in the Dark on shelves, we turn our attention to the next Asylum Pack in The Yuggoth Contract cycle, Murmers of Evil. Today, we present another card preview by Marius Hartland.

No use, either, to point out the even more startlingly similar belief of the Nepalese hill tribes in the dreaded Mi-Go or "Abominable Snow-Men" who lurk hideously amidst the ice and rock pinnacles of the Himalayan summits. When I brought up this evidence, my opponents turned it against me by claiming that it must imply some actual historicity for the ancient tales; that it must argue the real existence of some queer elder earth-race, driven to hiding after the advent and dominance of mankind, which might very conceivably have survived in reduced numbers to relatively recent times - or even to the present.

The Outer Ones

Xenobiology in the 1920's was a bit of a mess. Professor Wilmarth may have been an expert on literature, but that doesn't make him an authority on the matters of cryptozoology. Whatever the events are that are discribed in his letters, it must have confused him greatly. In turns the beings are described as insectoid, crablike and even bats and fungi are named when he tries to explain their morphology. It doesn't help that most of the records on these beings are suppressed. -For your own good of course. Even though the pinkish things didn't resemble a white, hairy humanoid even remotely, the name Mi-Go stuck.

Some scientists refer to them as the Outer Ones, although that name could just as easily be applied to the Byakhee. And even though these beings are similar enough, the Byakhee generally seem to be connected the H... The Unspeakable One, the “Mi-Go” are hunted by H's servants on earth. Then again, that might indicate a greater connection between these alien entities.

Some have tried to apply taxonomy to these beings, and called them “Fungi from Yuggoth.” Various sources point out that Yuggoth - Or Pluto, as it we call it now - is merely an outpost within our solar system and these being come from “far outside even the Einsteinian space-time continuum or greatest known cosmos.” It is also doubtful that these beings fall into the Fungi kingdom, a fact even questioned by most scientists that subscribe to the Transpermia Hypothesis.

A rose by any other name would still be thorny, though. “They” are here and slowly, but surely they draw their plans against us.

Death may Die

Protecting humanity against the forces of the Cthulhu Mythos is hard. Not only will you have a difficult time discerning what you're up against exactly (could you reliably tell the difference between a Shoggoth and a Formless Spawn when you'd encounter one? I don't think so...) but also these creatures are often difficult to harm. And even when you apply enough dynamite to the situation things not always work out. One moment you think you've shot the Local Sheriff (Core Set, F3) the next he was walking around as if he's some sort of Ghoulish Hag (Search for the Silver Key, F13.) Time to burst out the Murmurs of Evil Asylum Pack to make sure things are not just dead, but really really dead dead. Always remember rule #4: “The Double Tap.”

The Mi-go. Grave robbers from Outer Space. Well, at least they are when Specimen Room (Murmurs of Evil, F34) is involved. Smashing any dreams of reincarnation to further alien science. Clever surgeons as they are, they can manipulate their minds and bodies, cloning and transferring organs to alter their species in a twisted form of intelligent design. In the Call of Cthulhu The Card Game, the Mi-Go can spread icons and other stats across their populous. Now they can even incorporate whatever brain matter they find in the discard pile into their hive, raise their skill all the while preventing things coming back.

So, what can the Mi-Go do with an obscene amount of skill? Yes, you there in the back? Parallel Universe (The Thing From the Shore, F98?) Very good! Yes. The Outer Ones can terraform any story card to fit their accumulated acumen and win each and every struggle. A shocking change that can take place after anyone has been foolish enough to commit against them.

Well, that's it for today. Don't forget to aim your telescope at Perseus tonight. The comet C/2009 R1 McNaught is visible there. Why is it green? No one knows. It may just be a harbinger of the Ancient Ones! And if you see something that's not quite an insect, not quite a mushroom flapping in the darkness... Just pretend you haven't seen anything. It might have been a flying Yeti. Who will believe you?

Well, I was suprised to read the title for quite the opposite reason. The thing is I knew there was an old adventure with the same name. I am a huge Delta Green fan and thought this was a nod to that RPG, but it seems it was the name of a Deadlands/CoC cross over.

Okay, so my comment might be strange, but chances are I won't ever have a better opportunity to share it... I live in Argentina and back when the first Arkham Horror League started, my friends and I named our team "A Mi-Go's Friends". We were suprised we hadn't seen anyone trying to make a silly pun around the similarity between "mi-go" and "amigo" before. Until now, in the title of this article. It was about time! :D

PS: Oh... nice card, by the way.
