|Some Girls Wander By Miskatonic
A Call of Cthulhu Card of the Week by guest writer Marius Hartland

Edward met Asenath at a gathering of "intelligentsia" held in one of the students' rooms, and could talk of nothing else when he came to see me the next day. He had found her full of the interests and erudition which engrossed him most, and was in addition wildly taken with her appearance. I had never seen the young woman, and recalled casual references only faintly, but I knew who she was. It seemed rather regrettable that Derby should become so upheaved about her; but I said nothing to discourage him, since infatuation thrives on opposition.
- H.P. Lovecraft, The Thing on the Doorstep
If we believe horror stories, there is little more dangerous than getting an education. Sunnydale High is notorious for its high mortality rate, but if you really don't value your life, you'd be happy to know that trying to follow any course at the Miskatonic University is nothing less than an excuse to encounter something extremely blasphemous, abhorrent and generally mind-shatteringly unpleasant. Still, nobody seems to notice this, and people still apply.
It's likely you've met one of the students, Erin Morai, who plays a central role in the procedings of The Yuggoth Contract cycle. And now you'll meet another unfortunate soul who thinks that studying something as pretty as art is completely harmless and in no way an invitation to get her face bitten clean off by things that quite frankly just should not be.
Like Erin, Focused Art Student (Whispers in the Dark, F8) falls under the 'Student' category and hands out a little bonus when entering play. In preparation of an almost certain doom, you end up with a card to replace her for when the inevitable happens. An extra card is an extremely valuable commodity, helping to dig deeper in your deck, bringing you closer to whatever is going to solve the situation at hand and giving you an extra option almost immediately. One of the strategies of a Miskatonic University player is to send as many characters to the Stories and hoping some of them actually lives long enough to award some success tokens. And if you treat your classmates as total expendables, that extra card helps you keep the momentum in your favor.
An 'extra' card wouldn't be very 'extra' if she didn't have any merit herself. An investigation icon makes sure that she'll be able to get 3 success tokens when going somewhere unopposed – something a rush strategy likes. The arcane icon helps in getting someone back in the action on defense for another go at a token, or to prevent an opposing character to ready so you might have another opening when your next story phase comes.
Keeping your hand filled up while playing characters brings you one step closer in assembling a football team. I doubt you ever had the chance to actually use the ability of Norm Grzbowski (Ancient Horrors, F5) to humiliate an opponent in a real match, but a little draw and maybe a flock of Magah Birds (Journey to Unknown Kadath, F110) makes it almost seem possible.
The art student has a low enough cost to use with Hungry Dark Young (Core Set, F131) to complement its icons and to net you a card several times. If you manage to get Shub-Niggurath (Core Set, F121) active, this synergy could help a lot – and it won't be the last thing you'll ever hear from the Black Goat of the Woods.
It might look like this petit art student is totally innocuous, but it might turn out that the monsters have much to fear from her: Her ability to boost your tempo makes her a fine addition to your team of brave, but slightly careless academics. Or your Shub cult, if that's more your thing.
Special thanks to Marius Hartland, who provided this week's card of the week spotlight.

Have to agree, I have that album too...

YAY, Marius ! Another fine article, and interesting card.
