Announcing the upcoming release of Battles of Westeros
Battles of Westeros | Published 22 February 2010

"There are no true knights, no more than there are gods. If you can't protect yourself, die and get out of the way of those who can. Sharp steel and strong arms rule this world, don't ever believe any different."

–Sandor Clegane

The Houses of Westeros command vast armies of soldiers, some mounted on horses and others on foot. These brave men are armed not only with spears, swords, and bows, but also siege engines and other powerful machines of war. Across Westeros, the martial drums are calling to soldiers, strong and brave, and commanders, cunning and bold. Will you heed the call?

This weekend at the Fantasy Flight Games Event Center Grand Opening, lucky attendees were able to catch a glimpse of, and even play, an early copy of our latest game. Now, you can share in the excitement... Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Battles of Westeros! Battles of Westeros lets two players recreate the military conflicts set in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, taking part in battles directly from the books... or designing their own.

In this epic board game of battlefield tactics, players control either House Stark, the wards of Winterfell who have called their hearty allies to defend their honor and lands, or House Lannister, an aggressive force funded by Casterly Rock’s endless supply of gold.

Featuring over 138 detailed plastic figures and bases, 110 cards, a gorgeous double-sided six-panel board, over 32 map overlays, and much more, Battles of Westeros provides everything players need to relive the excitement and intrigue of the wars for the Iron Throne... and with their favorite Stark and Lannister characters.

Check out our description page for more information, then prepare to experience Westeros in a whole new way!

Set in the rich and vibrant world of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, Battles of Westeros is a board game of tactical battlefield combat for two players. With scenarios that include beloved characters and settings, players can recreate the most significant battles from The War of the Five Kings.

My last hope died to see a new Tide of Iron expansion beginning of this year (or ever?!). What a disappointment...

i'll admit i dont' get it. ffg have just announced talisman bix box expansion, i thought that was the secret black box. OH no.

then i saw a brand new napoleon game, i thought that was going to be it

but no

then i thought it's going to be a tide of iron expansion (those players are just hurtin for the russian front expansion)

but no

then i thought - holy crap it's the gears of war game

but no

what we got was battlelore ...? WTF?

i think they made a mistake there it should have been a tide of iron expansion, sure go ahead release a new battlelore expansion but why the big build up and big reveal for a game that's sat with another company for so long, they should have just brought that out like say the napoleon game.

it's like episode one all over again but with board games. are they taking marketing advice from george lucas?

Q: Will the classic BattleLore game continue to be supported?
CP: Yes. We are working on new releases as we speak, one of which will be announced on the FFG site in the near future.

CP: ..... We were concerned that the classic BattleLore base game, as had been created by Days of Wonder (“DOW”), was going to be troublesome on a production level. We did not, to be honest, expect it to essentially be non-manufacturable, as is the case.

So, as I said before, we’re working on a solution to this problem, and we have some short-term solutions that I think will work very well for players looking to get into BattleLore.

It would seem to me that this says BL is not being abandoned and that those who really appreciate and enjoy this system have something to look forward to besides ashes and the rending of clothes.

Looks good to me, can't wait to try this one out. I don't see why BL fans are so upset? Haven't you gotten something like 3 expansions in the last year? Plus, it's not like people are forcing you to throw away BL and buy this game, keep playing BL!

Wow, what a disappointment. There's so many other things I was hoping that small box was.

Looks fun to me.... and I still love my Battlelore!

@JerusalemJones: Yes, there have been a few BL things coming out recently, the problem being that all of them were already in development when FFG picked up BL a year and a half ago (in fact, the Heroes expansion was listed as "Coming Soon" on the DoW website when BL was first released 3 years ago!). So this is technically the first new BL thing that's a FFG creation rather than a DoW holdoverI say technically because it's not really BL (the C&C system is at the core of BLif it uses a different mechanic and is set in a different world, how is it a BattleLore game? Might as well call it a War of the Ring gamehey, that has fantasy battles utilizing medieval units!). And I've pretty much decided I'm done with ASoI&F until GRRM gets his butt in gear and starts writing it againcome on, 5 years for a novel that was mostly done is just driving me away, especially as little as I cared for most of the main characters in AFfC
