when an attachment adds an icon(s) to a character, are those new icons considered part of the characters printed icons or "in addition to" the printed icons.

"printed icons" are those printed on the card, so no, attachments do not modify the printed icons of the character.

Correct. Attachments give the character extra icons but they are not printed on the character itself so do not qualify as that characters "printed icons." Rule of thumb, when a card says printed, check to see what is literally printed in ink on the card. Then stop right there. Whatever you see or don't see is the what that card is referring to.
