So a late gaming mat post… but i had the problem that not all the tables i had to play on have enought space for a 3'x3' gaming mat.

So here is my idea for a gaming mat that can be used on any table wich is to small and is still easy to transport.

The idea is that you can play on a table wich is to small because the pols make sure that the mat can´t hang over the table without having trouble while transporting because the mat is still able to roll together…

What do you think…?

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.

I made a mat from a star pattern fabric I found at Walmart. Got someone to hem it up for me and it works wonderfully. Only cost me five dollars to have it made. Looks decent enough for it, plus it can be washed easily if something spills on it or what not.

Do you use the fabric as is or did you attach it something else to make more of a "mat."

I just bought 3/4 inch foam and plan of attaching printed star fields 8x10 sheets to it. I bought some spray adhesive but was wondering if anyone has experience with this or should I use something else to glue it with.

I tried to repair the sun visor on my minivan once with Elmer's spray adhesive. It is fabric covering foam over the interior material.

It was not a successful project. The glue remained sticky or became very stiff as it soaked the fabric.

Maybe you have an adhesive made for fabric, but I would not recommend this.

Why do you want such a thick play surface?

Just got into this game last week, and already been spending way too much time on it!  For my board, I decided to go with MDF and a spray painted star map.  The overall size is 4'x4' for larger games, with the area in the middle being 3'x3'.  I was going to just cut it to 3x3, but a friend I play with suggested leaving the border as a place to set tokens and cards.  Seemed like a good idea, so here we are.

I cut the board into four 2'x2' sections and used hinges to put them together, making it possible to fold it into a smaller and more mobile package.

The artwork is just a basic job with spray paint.  Black background with random blue added, and a smattering of white starfield.

EDIT: Had the wrong formatting tags, fixed it.

Well its cheap and one 4x8 sheet can work for this board and a trench I wanna build. I originally was g onna use foamcore but big sheets were ridiculous priced. Maybe ill keep looking my wife is pissed im even considering spraying that adhesive in the house anyway so thats why I asked. Its 13º here so outside is out.

I just finished making a very basic play mat for X-Wing:

You can check out how I did it at my blog: http://littlemens.blogspot.com/2012/12/what-do-we-want-cure-for-adhd.html

Both, I made three types of of it. One is just one piece hemmed up on the sides, another is double sided for the fabric and the other I had a rubber mat that I glued it on. I take both of the pure fabric ones with me when I go to the LGS or other peoples places to play.

Mine's not finished yet, but here's what it looks like so far.

Close up of the planet for you.

I did all this buy using only these items.

These are all very cool, though I certainly hope FFG is working with Lucasfilm to create some official versions of these ideas.

The one thing I do hope is that at least one of whatever they offer is a simple Star Wars star field (it IS distincitve, to my eye anyhow) without the crazy nebulae and hubble-esque space eye candy.  I can appreciate these looks under certain circumstances but they largely come off to me like murals from vans in the 70s.  I wouldn't mind a little visual interest like a planet horizon on an edge or something but I do hope we can get at least one beautiful starfield.

One doesn't have to think too long on other possibiities:

Death Star Surface (I even think there could/should be a way to deliver a version that has 3D elements to it (snap-ins?).  As an aside The 3D Death Star surface at the FFG Event Center is utterly amazing.

Over Endor

Bespin (this is one that would offer a nice change up from the predictable and still be very strong thematically).

Over Corsuscant (call me names if you must but I look foward to the prequel ships showing up in this line)

Hoth (for when we get the Snowspeeder and ATATs - they HAVE to make them right?!

Certain there is much more possibility.  Just spinning at thoughts.  Really enjoying this game.

Deck Officer: "Gunners! Fire at will!"

Laser turrets tracking targets, fires at targets.

Deck Officer: "What do you mean you rolled "blanks"?!?!?!"

Gunner: "I don't know what happened sir!!! The targets, where'd they go?"
