Expansion Theories
Published on 18 June 2012 - 13:53:46

Was wondering what others thought about what may be the next expansion theme for Mansions? Watching The Mummy and was thinking it would be cool to see an Egyptian setting on one side of a tile expansion and cellars and castle themes on the other. Streets, sewers, and wilderness was another idea. What do you guys think will come after Forbidden Alchemy?

Well, I'm slightly biased in that Shadow Over Innsmouth is hands-down my absolute favorite Lovecraft story of all time…

But, I think an Innsmouth setting would play out really well in MoM.  Deep Ones, hybrids, cultists, shoggoths.  Innsmouth Look cards, in a similar style as the "side effects", etc.  Bring in some of the Innsmouth Horror expansion investigators, there are some really fun ones from that box that could translate into some really unique characters in MoM.

It's such a diverse story/setting too, that it has elements that lend themselves really well to all kinds of scenarios while touching on all the classic Lovecraftian horror tropes.

I've already got this thing half created in my head!  FFG, make it official, and you can have all my money now.  :)

Tying in with the Egyptian theme, I'd like to see large tiles of an exhibit hall or space. Loads of potential for different scenarios: maybe a mansion is the home of a relic collector, or maybe a Miskatonic U. professor is hosting a private showing before they are transported to a scheduled exhibition?

In Memoriam: Lest we Forget their Brave Sacrifice, Citizens of Arkham!

Diane Stanley:  irretrievably lost in both time and space

Wilson Richards: swallowed by a moonbeast

Agnes Baker: suicide, induced by a feverish paranoia

Roland Banks: Missing, presumed dead.  Last seen in Innsmouth.

Charlie Kane: Stumbled into the maw of a moonbeast in the Black Caves

I read a post on BGG and the OP was taling about a campaign style expansion, like Descent 2nd is doing.  Many adventures tying together to finish in a last epic encounter with who knows who/what.

Would be cool!

Or maybe something with more outdoor/caverns/catacombs…

Ah yeah, something official like this would be great!  (I'd greatly enjoy the final "boss" being something like one of the Avatars/Masks of Nyarlathotep after a series of adventures, etc.)

We already have been trying to create an ongoing narrative between games, and I think this is another really natural progression for the game.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing too due to Elder Sign's museum setting and Arkham Horror's Egyptian expansion. I like also though that a couple stories that I have read thus far take place in Egypt too, like the Harry Houdini one and I believe there was one about the origins of the Necronomicon… been a while since I read some of Lovecraft's stories.

Very cool. I wonder how plausible it would be to continue retaining character elimination too, though? I think a campaign would require Investigators getting a small bonus against the Keeper too, as he can be so overpowering. Personally, I'd love to see a "boss" as an Ancient One, and takes up an entire square tile, stomping around the board. Have to have his own map for that though and investigators have to work around the monstrosity to find clues. It would be nuts.

Haven't got that far yet. Reading chronologically and I am currently stopped at his first attempt at a novel, the one that precedes Silver Key.

Even though the focus is on the works of Lovecraft, I would love to see an expansion to bring more classic monsters like mummies, vampires, werewolves and ghosts …. Maybe a wax museum? Or characters of world literature like Frankenstein's monster or the Invisible Man?

Amikezor, thanks for your reply. So I could see the other settings created and downloaded them all. And you? Do you are creating something new?

My pleasure. I have 1 scenario out there (esoteric order of dagon), 1 almost finished mines of yuggoth, a new concept with 3 mini-maps) but that won't be release in english in at least 6months, time for indepth playtesting and final maturation (those things always take a lot of time).
