Drawing cards-simple question

Started learning this game today, very excited. However, when drawing cards at the start of combat are they drawn off the top of their respective decks or sorted through and chosen at will? I think when moving they are chosen at will (sorting through the deck and choosing want you want) but I'm not 100% certain.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I'm going to reply to my own question because I just found the answer 
I thought my "hand" was the life pool deck; it isn't. I actually have a hand of cards taken from the draw step.
Move along, nothing to see here
