Five player variant
Published on 05 December 2009 - 18:54:10

Has anyone (perhaps during playtesting?) tried playing the game with 5 players ie. 4 heroes and Sauron? For example a turn would look like this: 2 heroes - 2 Sauron actions - 2 heroes - end?

Any other ideas? I have one extra friend at the table tonight...

HELLO

I would go w/the 3-4 player rules... but 5 players is "illegal" for a reason!

Hope that helps

Why would it be so bad with a 5 player game?  Give Sauron 1 more action and done.

Why would it be bad ?

1- Turn will drag end for LOOOOOONG before it is up to you to play.

2- Too many heros mean that there wont be enough opposition, nor favor for everyone. Keeping one hero avaliable to dedicated minion hunting or totally Blocading influence spawning to the Western Area of the map (with the haven there are many stop gap).

3- One more heros means one more area cleared of influence by turn, and one less area to put thoses in.

4- Just adding an action for Sauron wont be enough, you will need to give him upper limits.

5- Peculiar chain action will be avaliable for the heros with more map coverage and increased ability to quickly gather favor and concentrate them when needed.

6- More rest action (potentially) means Sauron markers will perhaps advance faster.

7- Game will have to be rebalanced and cards rework.

8- Hero victory by clearing Minions, Monsters or Gathering Favor will be tremendously easier. Sauron win by Shire or 3 Complot Cards tremendously harder

9- Increased difficulty for Sauron to play plots because of less influence on map, less minions or monsters at his turn start and less characters not consulted by heros turn end.

We attempted to play a variant of the game with 5-players and found it very slow and unwieldy.

It went like this...

Sauron got a turn between every 2 players.  Also, the story track was slowed down by 1/2 in order to give each side enough turns.  An interesting idea, but the game dragged and the downtime between when your turn ended (except for Sauron) and when it began again as a hero was minimum 20 minutes, not including analysis paralysis.

Then we went back to my place and tried it with 4 and I saw again why I loved this game!

I used to have a desk by the window...and I could watch the squirrels...and they were married.

I...could set...the building...on..fire...
