Designer Journal: Introducing Current and Legacy Environments

Nate French Provides Updates on the Future of LCGs

In the recent Living Card Game Fireside Chat, FFG Head of Studio Jim Cartwright introduced product retirement and the idea of distinguishing between a “Current Environment” and a “Legacy Environment” in our cooperative LCGs. This article takes a closer look at these concepts, particularly through the lens of asking how their introduction might impact or influence our design philosophy moving forward

“Wait…What Are We Talking About?”

If you missed the Fireside Chat, it’s probably worth reviewing what these concepts are.

Essentially, starting later this year, older expansion products for our LCG lines will begin to be retired, which means that we will no longer be reprinting those products, and that they are no longer considered to be a part of the Current Environment.

This practice allows us to define a more accessible Current Environment, which consists of the core set, any other evergreen (perpetually in print) expansions, as well as the newer expansions that have not yet been retired. In practice, this will be approximately 2–3 years’ worth of active expansions; precise lists of what is considered Current Environment will be maintained and updated by each line as new products are released or as older products are retired.

The definition of the Legacy Environment is pretty straightforward: any product that has ever been printed for the game is a part of this environment. All products within each game line will always be compatible with all other products from that line, which means if you have a card, you can play it in Legacy. For those who have been playing one of the games for a while, nothing about the Legacy Environment is technically new except for the name. Up until now, each game’s (only) environment has been, “if you have a card, it’s part of the environment.” With this change, long-time players can now choose between playing with all of the cards in Legacy, playing with just the new cards in Current, or bouncing back and forth between the formats as they see fit.

“But We Liked the Games the Way They Were…Why Change?”

While these changes will impact design, it is important to remember that the impetus behind the change was not primarily for the sake of that impact. More than anything else, these changes are being introduced to make the LCGs more accessible and (by virtue of that increased accessibility) more sustainable long-term.

By establishing and emphasizing the Current Environment, an LCG is more appealing and manageable for a retailer to keep in stock, and newer players are not intimidated, confused, and/or turned away by a never-ending wall of product. Such barriers have caused former LCGs to collapse under their own weight, and the primary goal of introducing this change is to avoid these obstacles and continue to publish new content for each line for years to come.

“These are Co-op Games…So Why Does Environment Matter?”

The idea of “set rotation,” in which sets of cards rotate out of a standard environment after a couple of years of availability, is not new to anyone who has played a competitive TCG. The benefits noted in the previous section (retailers don’t have to stock older sets after they have rotated, and new players don’t have to feel that they need the older cards to get into the game) are part of the reasoning for rotation, but the idea of “competitive balance” is tied into the reasoning as well. Which leads to the question, why define Current and Legacy environments at all for a cooperative game? Why not just retire products and let the resulting environment be whatever it becomes from group to group?

To explore an answer to these questions, let’s start with a simple example. Imagine a neutral Arkham Horror: The Card Game event card that costs 1 resource, and as an action deals 3 damage to a Ghoul enemy at your location.

Is this a good card?

The answer to that question depends entirely on the environment. What are the other 1-cost event cards that are available? Are there more efficient, non-event means of dealing damage? How likely are we to encounter a Ghoul when we play? How much damage does it usually take to defeat a Ghoul? Are there any incentives or disincentives for playing neutral cards? Notice how none of these questions are about the example card itself, but all of them refer to the rest of the environment.

Questions like these, and dozens more, inform the way in which we think (consciously and subconsciously), feel, and talk (with others in the community) about the card. And that is but one simple, straightforward card — similar types of environmental context are carried by every card in the game. In a nutshell, these thoughts, feelings, and conversations are the way we experience the game.

Are these considerations more important in a “competitive” (human vs. human) game than they are in a “cooperative” (human(s) vs. encounter deck) game? That’s debatable, and the answer will likely vary depending on whom you ask. For our purposes, the fact that such considerations exist as part of the cooperative LCG experience is enough to establish that having a clearly defined and well-cultivated environment is an important feature for our LCGs to maintain.

“How Do These Changes Affect FFG’s Approach to Design?”

As our cooperative LCGs are moving into this new era for the reasons outlined above, there are a number of ancillary benefits that present themselves to our design teams. We are excited by the promise of the following opportunities and look forward to exploring them through our design efforts.

The first and most significant of these opportunities is the ability to increase our focus on the Current Environment. Testing a new set of cards across a card pool with almost a hundred other products to establish the desired power level (for player cards) or difficulty (for each scenario) consumes a lot of bandwidth. Being able to sharpen the lens and really zoom in and emphasize the Current Environment throughout the development process will be invaluable for our designers as well as for our playtesters. This doesn’t mean we are going to completely abandon the Legacy Environment; what it does mean is that we will be focusing more heavily on optimizing the Current Environment, and if a design decision emerges where Legacy is pulling in one direction and Current is pulling in the other, we will always prioritize the direction that makes the Current experience better. It’s also likely that for players who enjoy the format, part of the appeal of the Legacy format will be to see and experience a more unbound version of the game, so it’s ok if there are a few more outrageous combos and “I can’t believe that just happened” moments within Legacy play.

The second such opportunity can be encapsulated by the word impact. When a new card is released, the size of the environment into which it is being released is going to play a significant role in how impactful that card is on the environment. Larger environments are more likely to grow stagnant (in which the same cards and strategies continually rise to the top as the best way to play); smaller environments are more likely to shift. This means that over time, as a card pool grows, the promise of each new card that is released is lessened: power creep aside, new cards become less and less impactful over time. Once a concept like product retirement is introduced, the Current Environment will evolve in a much more dynamic way, as newer cards have less competition, as older staples leave, and as new answers are discovered. This all combines to allow our design teams to be far more deliberate in how they craft the experience of each play environment, allowing the game to evolve at a more exciting rate, thereby feeling refreshed and more novel with each new release.

The third opportunity these changes present is an increased level of design freedom. Sometimes, there are cards or decks that restrict or even entirely close off design space in a card pool. Maybe it’s due to an interaction, maybe it’s due to a card’s raw efficiency, or maybe it’s due to a critical mass of similar cards within the pool. Whatever the case may be, the introduction and prioritization of the Current Environment, combined with the idea that most products will eventually be retired to Legacy, frees our designers to explore ideas in some of these areas that have previously been limited or closed off. This additional freedom enables more precise design for each character, deck, or scenario, making the overall game better in the process.

Right now, these details are a glimpse behind the scenes, impacting how we are approaching the design of future sets. More information regarding the exact makeup of each game’s first Current Environment, along with some tips from that game’s design team regarding how to get the most out of each environment, will be forthcoming as those details are developed. A likely ETA for the launch of the Current Environment as an official format is early 2026. Until then, you can continue to enjoy the games as always, playing within a single environment that contains every card.

Closing Thoughts

As previously noted, these changes mark a new evolution for our LCGs, and as we begin to craft new sets for these formats, it is likely that we will learn more about what we can and cannot do on the design side. LCGs have changed quite a bit over the years, and they will inevitably continue to evolve in the future. We look forward to exploring this next era with you.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce The Return of the King, the final repackaged expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game!

Experience the conclusion of the journey to destroy the One Ring in this epic expansion. This expansion contains six scenarios that recreate the adventures featured in the third part of the legendary The Lord of the Rings saga. In this box, you’ll also find over 60 hero and player cards, which can be used to build or enhance your decks for any The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game scenario or campaign.

Note: For longtime fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, this expansion combines all of the contents from The Flame of the West and The Mountain of Fire. If you already own those two expansions, you will not find any new cards or content in this product.

The Adventure Concludes

Just as with The Fellowship of the Ring Saga Expansion and The Two Towers Saga Expansion before it, this expansion comes with a plethora of new player cards to expand your deckbuilding options. Among those player cards are a handful of Fellowship sphere cards to enhance your Saga Expansion adventures.

Among these Fellowship cards is a new version of Frodo Baggins (The Return of the King Saga Expansion, 2) to serve as your Ring-bearer. Nearing the end of his long and arduous journey, Frodo has sacrificed much in his quest to destroy The One Ring (The Return of the King SE, 91). No longer able to use the ring to spend Fellowship resources for unique benefits, this version of Frodo can instead exhaust the One Ring to add a resource to any hero’s pool. This leaves his resources available for cards like Friend of Friends (The Return of the King SE, 24) and Orc Disguise (The Return of the King SE, 26), giving him new options for overcoming the challenges of Mordor.

Meanwhile, this expansion also comes with not one, but two different versions (The Return of the King SE, 1) of Aragorn (The Return of the King SE, 3) as a Fellowship sphere hero. Just like the version of Aragorn in The Two Towers Saga Expansion, these versions don’t count toward your hero limit, allowing your party to benefit from his potent abilities no matter what heroes you choose to use. Befitting his status as the heir to the throne of Gondor, either version of Aragorn can make use of the Banner of Elendil (The Return of the King SE, 25) to provide a party-wide buff to all of your other characters.

While the Fellowship sphere can’t be used outside of the scenarios from Saga Expansions, this expansion still provides plenty of other player cards that can be used for any scenario in the game. The Rohan hero Éomer (The Return of the King SE, 4) is a master of multitasking, able to quest and attack at the same time. Equip him with Guthwinë (The Return of the King SE, 10), and he can tear enemies to pieces while retrieving Rohan allies like Elfhelm (The Return of the King SE, 13) from your discard pile. Meanwhile Éomer’s sister, Éowyn (The Return of the King SE, 5) boasts high willpower for a Tactics hero and also reduces your starting threat by 3. Her willpower allows her to make great use of the Golden Shield (The Return of the King SE, 15) When the time comes, she can grant herself a whopping +9 bonus to her attack strength for the phase, allowing her to strike with such ferocity that even the mightiest of foes crumple beneath her blade. Shifting the focus from Rohan to Gondor, we have the hero Beregond (The Return of the King SE, 7), a stalwart warrior who boasts an impressive, unyielding defense. With his sentinel ability allowing him to leap to the defense of any player, Beregond can keep the party’s hit points and threat at healthy levels thanks to his inherent ability and high defense, especially if he utilizes a Desperate Defense (The Return of the King SE, 21). Combine that with the Livery of the Tower (The Return of the King SE, 20), and Beregond will be able to stand in defense of his allies until the very end.

The Mountain of Fire

As we mentioned earlier, the campaign of this expansion recreates the events and encounters of The Return of the King and picks up where The Two Towers Saga Expansion left off. The first scenario sees Aragorn and his companions traveling through The Paths of the Dead (The Return of the King SE, 28), searching for an Army of the Dead (The Return of the King SE, 30) to gain as a powerful ally (The Return of the King SE, 30). The Undead enemies of this scenario brandish the new “phantom” keyword, which converts all combat damage they would deal into threat, making them truly terrifying foes that put a time limit on your efforts to recruit them.

Each subsequent scenario continues the tale of The Return of the King. After gaining control of the Army of the Dead, Aragorn and his companions race to fend off The Corsair Fleet (The Return of the King SE, 47) harrying Gondor’s coasts. There, they fend off various Umbar Pirate Crews (The Return of the King SE, 55) before traveling to Minas Tirith (The Return of the King SE, 68) to aid in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam continue their quest with the One Ring, which swiftly turns into a rescue mission when Frodo is captured and taken to the tower of Cirith Ungol. Sam, believing himself to be the Last of the Company (The Return of the King SE, 96), must fight his way through the tower to rescue his master. After escaping the tower, the two Hobbits are given brief reprieve from Sauron’s watchful eye as Aragorn draws the Enemy’s attention to The Black Gate (The Return of the King SE, 109), where they confront vile foes such as The Mouth of Sauron (The Return of the King SE, 116) and the Nazgûl of Mordor (The Return of the King SE, 117). Finally, at the end of it all, Frodo must pass through the barren lands of Mordor, under the ever-watchful gaze of The Lidless Eye (The Return of the King SE, 145), and cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, finally destroying it once and for all.

As the forces of good and evil clash and the fate of Middle-earth at stake, you and your allies must face the toughest battle yet in order to banish the darkness and bring peace to the world. Ered Mithrin Campaign Expansion

As dark threats loom over Middle-earth, ever more people are torn from their homes and left without safety or refuge. What begins as a simple task of escorting a band of such wanderers to a new home quickly evolves into something drastically more perilous when a mighty threat emerges from the wilds of Rhovanion.

In the Ered Mithrin Campaign Expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, one to four players explore the Wilderlands of Middle-earth in their quest to defeat a dragon that is terrorizing the countryside. Over the course of nine scenarios—which can be played standalone or as part of a larger campaign—the heroes must battle Goblins, explore the vast Wilderland, and steel themselves for a showdown with the dragon itself!

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce Ered Mithrin, the next pair of repackaged expansions for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game!

Return to the Wilderlands of Middle-earth with the Ered Mithrin Hero Expansion and the Ered Mithrin Campaign Expansion. These products combine all of the content from The Wilds of Rhovanion and the corresponding Ered Mithrin cycle; all of the player cards from those expansions can be found in the Hero Expansion, while all of the scenario-related cards can be found in the Campaign Expansion, along with some new campaign cards that weren’t part of the original release. This is the perfect opportunity for new fans of the game to experience this much-beloved cycle of content, and for longtime fans to catch up on any parts of it that they may have missed. Whether you want one expansion or both, no fan of the game will want to miss out on Ered Mithrin!

Note: For longtime fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game who already own everything from The Wilds of Rhovanion and the original Ered Mithrin cycle, only the campaign cards in the Campaign Expansion will be new content in these products. As with the Revised Core Set, the Angmar Awakened Campaign Expansion, and the Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion, these campaign cards will be made freely available on our website as print-and-play content upon the Campaign Expansion’s release.

Warriors of Wilderland

To face the growing threats casting shadows over Wilderland, the Ered Mithrin Hero Expansion brings a plethora of player cards to expand your deckbuilding options, including two heroes for each of the four spheres.

In this expansion, you’ll find a wide variety of heroes from Dale, Wilderland, and other parts of northern Middle-earth. First among them is Brand son of Bain (Ered Mithrin Hero Expansion, 1), a Leadership hero who powers up Dale characters with attachments. His son, Bard (Ered Mithrin HE, 5), also utilizes attachments, making them a powerful duo when working together. Use resources from both Brand and Bard’s pools to play an attachment like Ancestral Armor (Ered Mithrin HE, 15) or a Warrior Sword (Ered Mithrin HE, 33) onto a Dale ally like Guardian of Esgaroth (Ered Mithrin, 10) or Redwater Sentry (Ered Mithrin HE, 12), and you’ll be able to draw a card thanks to Brand’s ability. Dale allies significantly power up while they have attachments on them, and even when they are finally defeated, Bard’s ability allows you to reclaim their attachments to pass onto others. Once you’ve played your attachments, use Traffic from Dale (Ered Mithrin HE, 23) to restock your resources, then crown a hero as the King of Dale (Ered Mithrin HE, 48) to play more allies at a discount. After you’ve built your army of allies, rally them with To Arms! (Ered Mithrin HE, 54) to get multiple uses out of them in a turn. The people of Dale have been through a lot, but through working together and properly arming themselves, they can stand against even the most threatening foes!

Of course, there are more than just Dale characters in this expansion. Among the Lore heroes is the Istari Radagast (Ered Mithrin HE, 8), a friend to animals of all kinds. Radagast can call upon Creature allies regardless of their sphere, which means he can use his resources for Messenger Ravens (Ered Mithrin HE, 11), Wild Stallions (Ered Mithrin HE, 45), Loyal Hounds (Ered Mithrin HE, 58), and the great eagle Meneldor (Ered Mithrin HE, 27) alike. Even better, whenever you play a Creature card, Radagast can quest that round for free, making him a vital hero if you wish to fill your deck with birds and beasts.

If a bit of burglary is more your style, look no further than the Tactics hero Bilbo Baggins (Ered Mithrin HE, 3). This Hobbit hero can deal damage to an enemy in the staging area while questing, making him supremely useful when multitasking is key. Use this ability to help Bilbo defeat the enemy guarding Sting (Ered Mithrin HE, 32), and then equip it to Bilbo to make him even better. Combine Sting with Swift and Strong (Ered Mithrin HE, 38), and your enemies will learn not to underestimate this Hobbit!

Roam Across Rhovanion

Whether or not you take up arms with the Hero Expansion, you can still look forward to an epic tale in the Ered Mithrin Campaign Expansion!

This campaign takes all of the scenarios from The Wilds of Rhovanion and the original Ered Mithrin cycle of Adventure Packs and strings them together to form a grand narrative. What starts as a simple task of escorting a band of refugees to a new home quickly spirals into a drastically more dangerous quest to defeat a dragon that is terrorizing the countryside. Along the way, the heroes will battle Goblins, explore the vast Wilderland, and steel themselves for the showdown with the dragon itself!

Like with previous Campaign Expansions, the Ered Mithrin campaign boasts some new additions compared to the original cycle. New boon allies like Turayn (Ered Mithrin Campaign Expansion, 165) and Melanwar (Ered Mithrin CE, 168) can join you on your quest, and you can earn special Accolades like Unbroken (Ered Mithrin CE, 176) or The Steadfast (Ered Mithrin CE, 177) to power up your heroes. On the flipside, the scheming Urdug (Ered Mithrin CE, 54) can now utilize his Cunning (Ered Mithrin CE, 184) or take advantage of your Misplaced Trust (Ered Mithrin CE, 185), making dealing with this Goblin even trickier than before.

Also new to the Campaign Expansion is a brand-new card type: treasure cards! These cards function similarly to player attachments, but they must be discovered during the campaign before you can add them to your deck. Campaign cards such as Journey Up the Anduin (Ered Mithrin CE, 164) and Lost In Mirkwood (Ered Mithrin CE, 167) provide different conditions for gaining treasures, and if you manage to beat the scenario after claiming a treasure, you can use it for the rest of the campaign. Utilize these opportunities to get ahold of powerful artifacts, such as the Anvil of Gundabad (Ered Mithrin CE, 195), the Dwarf-Lord’s Crown (Ered Mithrin CE, 198), or the Masterwork Bow (Ered Mithrin CE, 203), and wield their abilities to aid your quest in later scenarios.

However, you must also tread carefully, for the enemy forces will grow stronger with each scenario as well. The Ered Mithrin campaign utilizes an evolving encounter deck that changes with each playthrough, thanks to the new treachery A Growing Threat (Ered Mithrin CE, 166). This special burden can add almost any standard encounter card into the campaign pool, which means you could end up dealing with certain threats for the entirety of the campaign. Even beyond that, though, there are also new burdens that strengthen over time, such as The Threat to Wilderland (Ered Mithrin CE, 171) and Dagnir’s Spawn (Ered Mithrin CE, 172). With so much variability and change over time, the encounter deck is sure to keep you on your toes until the very end!

Reminder: If you already own the original Ered Mithrin cycle, the new campaign cards—including the treasure cards—will be available as print-and-play content on our website after the Campaign Expansion’s release.

Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion

For an age past, Elves have departed from the Grey Havens, sailing the western ocean of Middle-earth in beautiful white ships, often never to return. But a storm is brewing on the horizon, and something foul awaits on a forgotten isle of Númenor.

In the Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, one to four players sail across the oceans of Middle-earth, battling Corsairs on the high seas and exploring uncharted ruins of Númenor, all while defending the Grey Havens from fierce raiders. Over the course of nine scenarios—which can be played standalone or as part of a larger campaign—the heroes must confront pirates, wraiths, sea monsters, and a persuasive villain who commands a fleet of powerful ships.

This expansion includes all of the scenarios originally featured in The Grey Havens and the Dream-chaser cycle of content, now repackaged into one box along with all-new campaign content.

Experience the next chapter of the journey to destroy the One Ring in this epic expansion. This expansion contains six scenarios that recreate the adventures featured in the second part of the legendary The Lord of the Rings saga. In this box, you’ll also find over 60 hero and player cards, which can be used to build or enhance your decks for any The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game scenario or campaign.

Note: For longtime fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, this expansion combines all of the contents from The Treason of Saruman and The Land of Shadow. If you already own those two expansions, you will not find any new cards or content in this product.

The Adventure Continues

Just as with The Fellowship of the Ring Saga Expansion before it, this expansion comes with a plethora of new player cards to expand your deckbuilding options. Among those player cards are a handful of Fellowship sphere cards to enhance your Saga Expansion adventures.

Among these Fellowship cards is a new version of Aragorn (The Two Towers Saga Expansion, 1), a strong and versatile hero who can fight, defend, and support his allies in equal measure. This version of Aragorn doesn’t count toward your hero limit, can spend his resources to ready heroes, and can make use of the special Fellowship event The Three Hunters (The Two Towers SE, 27). Just take care to keep him healthy; as with other Fellowship heroes, if Aragorn is ever defeated, it’s game over!

This expansion also adds another version of Frodo Baggins (The Two Towers SE, 2) to serve as your Ring-bearer. This version of Frodo has grown a little more confident and capable since beginning his journey, allowing him to exhaust The One Ring (The Two Towers SE, 139) to boost his willpower and attack stats for the round. Frodo can then use this boost to lower an enemy’s attack and defense with Speak Your Promise! (The Two Towers SE, 26), providing assistance to his allies on both the offensive and defensive fronts.

As a reminder, the Fellowship sphere can only be used when playing scenarios from Saga Expansions. Thankfully, this expansion comes with plenty of player cards that can be used for any scenario, including a healthy spread of Gondor, Rohan, and Ent heroes and allies! Take Faramir (The Two Towers SE, 3), for example, who enters the fray as a Leadership hero that can snipe enemies from afar and ready his allies once he engages those enemies. The King of Rohan himself, Théoden (The Two Towers SE, 4), grants you a discount on Rohan allies like Gamling (The Two Towers SE, 14) and Hama (The Two Towers SE, 15), while the Gondorian Ranger Damrod (The Two Towers SE, 5) grants you that same discount on Trap cards like Ambush (The Two Towers SE, 21). Of course, the story of The Two Towers would not be complete without the Ents, and the hero Treebeard (The Two Towers SE, 6) can lead allies like Skinbark (The Two Towers SE, 12) and Quickbeam (The Two Towers SE, 20) into battle with an Entmoot (The Two Towers SE, 23)!

The Treason of Saruman

As mentioned earlier, the campaign of this expansion recreates the events and encounters of The Two Towers. The first scenario has you chasing after the Uruk-hai (The Two Towers SE, 34) that captured your friends. Throughout this scenario, you’ll have to contend with a “pursuit value” that makes things harder for you the more it grows, and if it ever reaches 30, the Uruk-hai have reached Isengard and delivered their prisoners to Saruman. You can’t let that happen, so chase them down, confront Uglúk (The Two Towers SE, 32), and rescue your friends!

Each subsequent scenario continues the tale of The Two Towers. From defending the people of Rohan at Helm’s Deep (The Two Towers SE, 53) to confronting Saruman (The Two Towers SE, 72) alongside the Ents, Aragorn and his companions have an uphill battle from the moment they set out in their quest. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam continue on their quest with the One Ring, passing through the Evil-smelling Fens (The Two Towers SE, 97) and Shifting Quagmires (The Two Towers SE, 98) of the Dead Marshes and confronting the monstrous spider Shelob (The Two Towers SE, 126). Their journey is already fraught with peril, and if that wasn’t enough, their companion and guide, Sméagol (The Two Towers SE, 147b), can turn on them at any time by flipping and becoming Gollum (The Two Towers SE, 147a)!

The Road to Isengard

As Saruman’s armies tear across the land and the Ring-bearer’s safety hangs by a thread, you and your fellow heroes will have to fight your hardest in order to keep Middle-earth from descending into darkness. Whether you missed the original release of The Treason of Saruman and/or The Land of Shadow or are just now getting into The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, you can look forward to continuing your journey through this epic saga when The Two Towers Saga Expansion arrives in October.

Gen Con 2023 is fast approaching!

Just like last year, Fantasy Flight Games will be appearing at this massive event in Indianapolis, Indiana. You may have already registered for some of our events, but just in case you missed any of the information floating about, here is a quick look at the events we’ll be hosting. Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Gen Con 2023 Scenario

As is tradition at Gen Con, we will be hosting a large-scale multiplayer event for Arkham Horror: The Card Game! Join game designer Duke Harrist as he guides investigators through a revamped version of a classic standalone scenario, this time with a new, unique twist!

Descent: Legends of the Dark

Learn-to-Play

With its second Act, The Betrayer’s War, releasing shortly after the event, Gen Con provides the perfect opportunity to jump into the grand adventure that is Descent: Legends of the Dark! This learn-to-play event has you experiencing the base game’s first scenario, where you will take control of one of four heroes—Brynn, Galaden, Syrus, or Vaerix—and launch your journey into the world of Terrinoth.

The Hunt for the Dreadnaught Scenario

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is back at Gen Con, with another round of the massive multiplayer scenario, The Hunt for the Dreadnaught. Hot on the heels of the release of the Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion, this high seas adventure has multiple teams of heroes working together to overcome the threat of vicious Corsairs. Join game designer Jeremy Zwirn and experience this epic scenario for yourself!

Dream-Chaser Campaign Expansion **– Voyage Across Belegaer Scenario**

And speaking of sailing the high seas, if you haven’t yet started your voyage through the Dream-chaser campaign, you’ll have the opportunity to try out the campaign’s first scenario at Gen Con as well. Chart your course and set sail through the Voyage Cross Belegaer as you begin the epic tale of the Dream-chaser!

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

NeXt Evolution Sneak Preview

Marvel Champions: The Card Game will have a big presence at Gen Con this year, with no less than three different events! The first of these events is a chance to play the first scenario of NeXt Evolution, the sixth campaign expansion for the game and one that will be hitting store shelves just a couple short weeks after Gen Con. In this scenario, Morlock Siege, you and your fellow heroes take on the Marauders and try stop them from wreaking havoc in the Morlock tunnels beneath New York.

If you’re as excited for the next wave of Marvel Champions content as we are, then you won’t want to miss this opportunity to try out the first scenario of NeXt Evolution early! Just make sure you bring your own hero deck, as we will not be providing previews of any new heroes. You can sign up for the event here.

Marvel Champions Campaign Contest Scenario

Toward the end of last year, we hosted a special campaign contest for Marvel Champions, in which fans of the game could mix-and-match scenarios and modular sets from throughout the game’s expansions and use them to create their very own custom campaigns. At Gen Con this year, we’ll be hosting a special opportunity to play a scenario from one of the contest’s winners with other fans of the game. This scenario is the very first one from Awesome Campaign Volume 1, which pits you and your team against the powerful and dangerous Ronan the Accuser. Thankfully, you’ll have some support from the Guardians of the Galaxy and some extra setup rules, making this a scenario a uniquely fun challenge!

You can sign up for this event here. Please note that you will need to bring your own hero deck to this event, and that hero cannot have the Guardian trait. You’ll also need to bring a Basic Guardian ally to aid you in the fight against Ronan.

Marvel Champions Learn-to-Play

What if you’ve never played Marvel Champions: The Card Game, and you’re wondering what all the hype is about? Not to worry, we’ve got you covered there as well: the third Marvel Champions event we’ll be hosting is a learn-to-play event geared toward folks who’ve yet to dive into this awesome card game. Take on the villain Rhino, stop him from breaking things and taking things, and learn what kind of hero you want to be.

You can sign up for this event here. Pre-built hero decks will be provided—all you’ll need is the desire to fight crime!

If you participate in any of the three Marvel Champions: The Card Game events, you will be awarded with two sets of special alternate-art promo versions of the Energy, Genius, and Strength resource cards. One set will be themed after Spider-Man (Peter Parker), and the other is themed after Captain Marvel!

Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R.

Learn-to-Play

Jumping from our first Marvel game to our most-recent one, anyone who has yet to try out Marvel D.A.G.G.E.R. can take the game for a spin in this learn-to-play event. Choose your hero and race across the globe with your team to complete missions, battle enemies, and face off against the nemesis in a final showdown!

Twilight Inscription

24-Player Game

Twilight Inscription is a roll-and-write game designed for 1 to 8 players…but what if it was bigger? In this event, we’ll be showcasing some special massive-multiplayer rules for the game that allow up to 24 players to face off at once! With all of the game’s factions in play at the same time, the Twilight Imperium galaxy has never felt this grand.

We’ll also be hosting a learn-to-play for Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game. In this easy-to-learn game, you and your opponent each choose a side, playing as either the Galactic Empire or the Rebel Alliance. As the game progresses, each player strengthens the power of their starting decks and works to destroy each other’s bases.

Game Demos

At Gen Con, you’ll have the opportunity to get a sneak peek at Star Wars: Unlimited, FFG’s new trading card game of unlimited possibilities! We’ll be hosting lots of demos for the game throughout the weekend of the event, allowing people to get their first real look at how the game is played.

Announcing the New, Repackaged Dream-chaser Cycle

For millennia, the Elves of the Grey Havens have built beautiful, majestic white ships to sail into the West. No one knows the seas as well as they, but these Noldor sailors and navigators must remain ever vigilant. A storm is brewing on the horizon, and something foul awaits on a forgotten isle of Númenor.

Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce Dream-chaser, a pair of repackaged expansions for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game!

Return to the game’s epic seafaring saga with the Dream-chaser Hero Expansion and Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion. These products combine all of the content from The Grey Havens and the corresponding Dream-chaser cycle; all of the player cards from those expansions can be found in the Hero Expansion, while all of the scenario-related cards can be found in the Campaign Expansion, along with some brand-new campaign cards that weren’t part of the original release. This is the perfect opportunity for new fans of the game to experience this cycle of content, and for longtime fans to catch up on any parts they may have missed. Whether you want one expansion or both, no fan of the game will want to miss the Dream-chaser experience!

Note: For longtime fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game who already own everything from The Grey Havens and the original Dream-chaser cycle, only the campaign cards in the Campaign Expansion will be new content in these products. As with the Revised Core Set and the Angmar Awakened Campaign Expansion, these campaign cards will be made freely available on our website as print-and-play content upon the Campaign Expansion’s release.

A Skilled Crew

To challenge the nefarious, pillaging Corsairs plaguing the western seas, the Dream-chaser Hero Expansion comes with a treasure trove of player cards to expand your deckbuilding options, including two heroes for each of the four spheres.

In this expansion, you’ll find a wide variety of heroes from all reaches of Middle-earth. Among them, you will find the steward Denethor (Dream-chaser Hero Expansion, 1), a Leadership hero who can provide support to other Gondor heroes at the table (including those of other spheres). Then there is Galdor of the Havens (Dream-chaser HE, 8), a Lore hero who gives you more control of your opening hand and can even draw you an entirely new hand once per game. Of course, in a cycle themed around sailing the seas, having seafaring heroes like Na’asiyah (Dream-chaser HE, 3) the Corsair and Círdan the Shipwright (Dream-chaser HE, 5) are a natural fit. Na’asiyah is a Tactics hero and a one-woman army, capable of spending resources to power up her attack and defense, while Círdan’s high willpower and ability to let you choose between two cards to draw during the resource phase ensures that you’ll always have the tools you need when going on quests.

As for what those tools are, you will find plenty of allies, attachments, and events in this expansion, many of them themed after the Noldor and/or high seas adventure. Use the Mariner’s Compass (Dream-chaser HE, 17) to find a more ideal location for questing, then set up an Anchor Watch (Dream-chaser HE, 20) to keep your party safe from enemy attacks. Use Noldor allies like Mithlond Sea-watcher (Dream-chaser HE, 28) and Veteran Sword-elf (Dream-chaser HE, 30) to take draw strength from your discard pile, then call upon the Lindon Navigator (Dream-chaser HE, 57) in tandem with an Explorer’s Almanac (Dream-chaser HE, 61) to clear a location without having to travel to it. With the mighty Glorfindel (Dream-chaser HE, 39) and the handy Linhir Sea-captain (Dream-chaser HE, 40) as your allies, you’ll have plenty of willpower available for quests while still having characters ready to act later in the round!

Setting Sail

Whether or not you heed the call of the Hero Expansion, you can still look forward to a high seas adventure in the Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion!

This campaign takes all of the scenarios from The Grey Havens and the original Dream-chaser cycle of Adventure Packs and strings them together to form an epic tale. After journeying to the Grey Havens, the heroes are swept up in a voyage to an island containing lost ruins of Númenor to discover what lies there. The journey is long and fraught with danger, from pillaging Corsairs to vengeful undead to the wrathful waters of the sea itself!

Throughout the nine scenarios of the Dream-chaser campaign, you and your party will sail across the ocean, and we mean that in more than just a narrative sense—it’s also part of the game! During your voyage, you’ll have to chart your course, establish your heading, and perform sailing tests to fight changing winds and raging currents. That’s not all; you’ll also have to contend with the Corsair deck. This special deck is entirely made up of seafaring enemies, such as the Cunning Pirate (Dream-chaser Campaign Expansion, 154) and Vicious Marauder (Dream-chaser CE, 155), who will come aboard and attack you whenever one of their ships—such as a Corsair Warship (Dream-chaser CE, 151)—engages with you. Under normal circumstances, such a situation could quickly become overwhelming, but the pirates aren’t the only ones with ships at their disposal.

That’s right, in this campaign, each player gets their very own ship to control! These powerful objective cards can provide much-needed boons during your sea voyage, including a means of fighting off enemy ships. In addition to the titular Dream-chaser (Dream-chaser CE, 136), which is required in each playthrough, players can choose to sail the Dawn Star (Dream-chaser CE, 137), the Duskbringer (Dream-chaser CE, 138), the Glórinaith (Dream-chaser CE, 139), the Nárelenya (Dream-chaser CE, 140), or the Silver Wing (Dream-chaser CE, 141). That’s six ships in total; two more than the original release!

The new ships aren’t the only things unique to this expansion. You’ll also find a plethora of new campaign cards, including upgrades for your ships, such as Armor Plating (Dream-chaser CE, 172) or a Ballista (Dream-chaser CE, 173). However, you can also upgrade the ships themselves, flipping them over to their stronger versions!

How do you upgrade your ships? By spending experience (XP)! This is a new mechanic for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game introduced in this repackaged expansion. Each scenario awards a certain amount of XP, depending on what conditions were met on that scenario’s campaign card. You can spend it to upgrade your ship, upgrade the aforementioned Armor Plating and Ballista (and other Modification boons), and other boons as well, such as a handy Spyglass (Dream-chaser CE, 180) or the mysterious Black Key (Dream-chaser CE, 183)! Just be sure to watch out for the burdens that will also follow you from one scenario to the next, such as the Corsair Crowley (Dream-chaser CE, 178) or an Ominous Fate (Dream-chaser CE, 176).

Reminder: If you already own the original Dream-chaser cycle, the new campaign cards, upgradeable player cards, and all six ship cards—including their new upgraded sides—will be available as print-and-play content on our website after the Campaign Expansion’s release.

The Journey So Far

A Look Back at the Repackaged Content for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

For over a decade, The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game has brought players around the world on countless adventures through the fantastical realm of Middle-earth. Just one year ago, we released the Revised Core Set for this legendary game, allowing a wave of newcomers to join the veteran players of Fantasy Flight Games’ first cooperative Living Card Game.

Today, we’d like to take a brief look back at the release of the Revised Core Set, the repackaged content that came after it, and a bit of insight to the current release model for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game.

A Grand Resurgence

In September of 2021, we revealed the Revised Core Set for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game in our Gen Con 2021 In-Flight Report. This game is FFG’s longest-running card game, and even though there were no “new” expansions on the horizon, we still wanted to support the LCG and provide opportunities for new players to finally take the plunge.

The Revised Core Set was the first step in fulfilling that desire. Packed with enough cards and content to support up to 4 players from the get-go, the Revised Core was the perfect chance for us to bring the game back into the forefront of players’ minds. It also allowed a new generation of tabletop gamers to get into the game without having to track down two copies of the original core set.

The release of the Revised Core gave us another opportunity, one that would excite even veterans of the game: the addition of campaign mode. When The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game first released, campaign mode did not exist. You could technically play the scenarios of a particular expansion or wave in sequential order, but there was nothing that directly connected one scenario to the next. Eventually, we would release the saga expansions, which allowed players to experience the events of the classic The Lord of the Rings book series across eighteen scenarios. Those saga expansions introduced campaign play to the game, but you could still only experience that mode with those specific expansions.

The Revised Core Set opened the door for us to add campaign mode to the rest of the game, providing a new way to play and giving the game that last little piece that was always missing. Now, with campaign mode being added to every The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game wave we’re repackaging, there could not be a better time to get into the game.

Hot on the heels of the Revised Core Set was The Dark of Mirkwood, a scenario pack that took two scenarios from a long out-of-print collector’s edition core set and finally made them available for the world at large. This pack served two purposes: the first was to fulfill an old promise we made to make the scenarios from that special core set readily available, and the second was to expand the campaign for the Revised Core Set from 3 scenarios to 5. With some new boons and burdens sprinkled in to complete the package, this pack ended up being a great capstone for the Revised Core experience.

Following The Dark of Mirkwood, we released four starter decks: Dwarves of Durin, Elves of Lórien, Defenders of Gondor, and Riders of Rohan. A first for the game, these starter decks provided pre-built decks themed around the various factions of Middle-earth, which new players could use to kick-start their adventures and ease themselves into the deckbuilding aspect of the game. Each starter deck drew on cards from all throughout The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game’s long history to create cohesive and fun experiences for both newcomers and veterans alike.

Then, in March of 2022, we announced the first fully-repackaged cycle of content for the game: Angmar Awakened. What once existed as a deluxe expansion and six adventure packs now came in the form of just two boxes: the Angmar Awakened Hero Expansion, which contained all of the player cards from the original cycle; and the Angmar Awakened Campaign Expansion, which contained all of the scenario cards, plus new campaign content (as we talked about earlier).

This brought lots of excitement, of course, but also some questions. Back when we announced that we would be doing repackages for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, we mentioned that we would not be rereleasing all of the cycles. On top of that, while Angmar Awakened was the first repackaged cycle, it was not the original first cycle for the game. So why did we go with this one first?

The answer is simple: since we were not planning to repackage everything, we wanted to prioritize providing newer players with the “greatest hits” from the game line, as well as cycles that best represented what the game was capable of. In many people’s eyes, the Angmar Awakened cycle is when the game really hit its stride, taking the lessons learned from its predecessor and improving both the narrative and gameplay aspects overall. While the Angmar Awakened campaign is certainly more challenging than the one in the Revised Core Set, players should have plenty of tools to take it on between the Revised Core, the starter decks, and the Angmar Awakened Hero Expansion!

To cap off 2022 for The Lord of the Rings releases, we saw a repackage of the first two saga expansions combined into one: The Fellowship of the Ring Saga Expansion. As the expansions based on the legendary works of Tolkien himself, there was no way we couldn’t rerelease the saga expansions for this game. Plus, with the new focus on campaign play for the repackaged content, it made even more sense to repackage the expansions that pioneered the game’s campaign mode in the first place. Now, each saga expansion will correspond to one third of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, meaning you no longer have to track down two separate expansions in order to recreate the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Players can look forward to playing each part individually or engaging in an epic-length campaign through the entirety of The Lord of the Rings saga once the next two parts release!

The Road Goes Ever On

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is still going strong, and will continue to do so in the years to come. We have a lot more repackages to go, and with them plenty of exciting things for the game on the horizon. Whether you’re a newcomer just getting into the game or a veteran returning to experience the campaign modes for the first time, one thing is for certain: The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is here to stay.

The western lands of Eriador have long remained peaceful under the vigilance of the Rangers of the North. Yet no grave can contain the evil forces of Angmar, which lurk in wild and ancient places, stretching the valorous Dúnedain rangers far and thin in their duty to protect the land.

Twilight Imperium Tournament

As part of the Twilight Imperium 25th Anniversary celebration, we will be hosting a Twilight Imperium tournament on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Gen Con. The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game – The Hunt for the Dreadnaught

It’s tradition to have a standalone The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game scenario at Gen Con, and this year we see the return of The Hunt for the Dreadnaught. This high seas adventure sees multiple teams of heroes working together to overcome the threat of vicious Corsairs. Join designer Jeremy Zwirn and experience this epic multiplayer scenario for yourself. We’ll run this scenario at least once each day of the event, so sign up for a slot if you haven’t already done so!

Arkham Horror: The Card Game – Machinations Through Time

It’s also tradition to have a massive, multiplayer Arkham Horror: The Card Game scenario at Gen Con, and this year is no exception! Join game designer MJ Newman for a round of Machinations Through Time, a time-traveling adventure where you and your fellow investigators try to stop a dark force from altering history. This scenario will be run multiple times throughout all four days of the event, so be sure to stop by and see the horrors unfold!

Marvel Champions: The Card Game – Mutant Genesis Preview

The X-Men are coming to Marvel Champions: The Card Game! Fans of the game can enjoy a sneak peek at the upcoming campaign expansion, Mutant Genesis, which will be held multiple times a day on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Gen Con. Join game designer Caleb Grace as you take on Sabretooth and see if you can beat the first scenario of the Mutant Genesis campaign. You can bring your own deck or try out one of the new heroes, Shadowcat and Colossus!
